I've been reading a lot of romance recently - my TPL card is about to expire so I'm trying to read things only available there, which is mostly romance. I think I might be a bit burned out. I feel like I should have loved this but I was only neutral.

Eva Leigh is back with another darling tale of daring ladies and their dashing loves. This time, we meet Tamryn, a lady from Cornwall leading a smuggling ring to provide for the welfare of her town, and Kit, a recently appointed lord with a soldier's history and burdens in search of distraction from his demons.

I'm giving this book a four star rating because of my personal prejudice against stories that have the characters fall in love in a matter of days/weeks. I find that unrealistic, but that could just be me. Also, the ending was a bit anticlimactic.

Otherwise, Leigh is once again keeping me in stitches and flipping pages so fast I need to keep a fire alarm right above my reading chair. She is a master at endlessly throwing barriers in the way of her characters, upping the stakes, and pitting two hearts against each other in the most deliciously painful manner. Her lush writing is a treat in a world made rough by conflict; the perfect getaway!

Not as exciting as it should be considering that the heroine is a smuggler. Not a bad book, but not a super memorable one either.

The set up for this novel was .... intricate. I could see the various strings being pulled and the scaffolding set up. But OH! What a payoff! I loved the way Leigh subverted so many tropes and "standard" scenes from historical romance. My favorite was the scene when Tamsyn is behind the desk and giving Kit the once over. SO GOOD. Also, by FAR the best grovels I have ever read. Kit's especially was so good I re-read it a couple times.

This is the kind of romance that, once finished, it's best to take a genre break for a bit. It's that good.

Not for me sadly. There was just too much going on here for me to be able to feel like I got to know the hero and heroine and what made them tick. There were so many plot points to hit that there wasn’t any time to do character development what with smugglers and fortunes and sex clubs and evil relatives and business proposals and so much more. Never mind.
