A very quick, painfully beautiful read. It felt intentionally heart-wrenching and at moments like the author wanted us to suffer reading it. I don’t love this vision of our future and I generally prefer more hopeful dystopian fiction, but I think this is an important read that will linger with me for a while.

The protagonist made some really dumb decisions I have a hard time forgiving. I also wasn't invested enough in the characters to care about the romantic element at all. Both the narration and editing were kinda weird at times too.

As with every book by Silas House that I read, I’m both grateful for the pages and disappointed that there are not more of them. I think because he’s such a great story teller, I could maybe just ‘listen’ to him tell his words, his friends, his worlds forever on end. Lark Ascending is merely the latest in an ever-growing collection of wonderful books to experience. And, while this one is terrifying in its makeup, not least of which because it seems as though it’s moments away from reality, it’s still a beautiful story full of hope. But, damn you Silas for putting Seamus in this one, but thank you also because it made me hug my dog that much closer. We don’t deserve them, but we are grateful for their love and friendship.
