I don't have a lot to add to the narrative on this one. It reads like a CW pilot meets The Selection. It felt like I was feeding my brain once cream for dinner, indulgent, fun, and highly needed on occasion.

I quickly got sucked in and found myself enraged at the AUDACITY of a certain character. I wasn't even halfway through, before I placed a hold at the library, on the 2nd book.

There just wasn't enough that I enjoyed about it to give it a better rating but it's not terrible, 3 is a respectable rating. It was a reasonably fun audiobook to listen to while cooking, but it's not a series that I'll be continuing either.

Unfortunately, the book suffered from focusing on too many characters and so only superficially dealt with each characters conflicts and romance. In fact, it was really difficult for the first 50% of the book to keep track of each character (who they are, who they like, their personality) because there's FOUR character perspectives that it's roughly equally split between and they're all young women who are either in the royal family or closely tied to it. Not to mention everyone is cheating on everyone (not judging but it makes it even harder to keep track) or in some other secret relationship. So why did we need four characters?

I also don't feel like this needed to be a royalty focused book? So much time is spent on relationship drama and hardly any on the royalty stuff? It's just kind of a backdrop that has only some impact on the plot so it felt more Gossip Girl than say, Red, White, and Royal Blue. I honestly think this would make a better TV show than book series just because of the way it's structured. But that's just my opinion lol

Spoilers!......kinda.....in an abstract way

Loved the premise though wasn't blown away by the book itself. I liked it, it was interesting and for the most part I liked the characters (though the princes ex's perspective did get annoying in parts). Will read the second mostly out of curiosity as to how it all ends, as I am quite invested in the relationships. The standout moment of this book is easily the ending! The VISUALS of the bowing and the church bells! I loved it! Stand out character: Teddy, the grace that he handles the Beatrice situation is something to be admired.

this book was really good; I did have alot of trouble getting into it in the beginning though. I found the beginning really slow but once things started to pick up it was really enjoyable.

At times, cheesy, but overall a fun read! A lot of it isn’t relatable since most people reading the book aren’t a part of a royal family, but the underlying tones of responsibilities and choosing between who you are and what you do or your family is a tone that rings familiar to so many of us. The four POVs keep things interesting and let you see into different character’s heads, which is always entertaining. And who doesn’t love a few forbidden romances?

Basically, if Gossip Girl were about royalty. Drama, politics, backstabbing, and trading partners… American Royals has it all. Pretty much everyone is obnoxious and spoiled...but you can’t help but like them anyway (except you, Daphne. You suck). Maybe it’s the eldest daughter in me, but Beatrice was my favorite character by far. This was a super quick read, and had so many tropes that, while slightly overused, are still fun to see.
I kind of hated the sisters-fighting-over-a-guy storyline. It makes me uncomfortable and feels very unrealistic—what kind of sister would do that??

Happy ending meter (no specific spoilers, just the general vibe of the ending):
Cliffhanger-y! I hadn’t realized that there was a sequel, so I was expecting more resolution...good thing I got the next one from the library super quick!
