I really was enjoying this book up until the last 10% and then it lost me. Did not like the ending at all

Surprisingly, I actually ended up enjoying this book! In the beginning, the book was really dragging, and I wanted to DNF it. I just couldn't feel any connection between Will and Fern; therefore, most of their scenes felt like pointless conversation. HOWEVER, as we progressed in the storyline, I started to feel sympathy for Fern and, dare I say, a liking towards her? She wasn't your typical "I'm not like other girls" tucks hair behind ear character. I think she displayed real vulnerabilities and pain, especially when it came to the death of her mother. I could genuinely feel the pain of loss through Fern's character. Now, is the storyline realistic? No. I don't believe it's possible to derail your life because of a person you met one time unless you're a crazy person. Also, Will did her SO dirty, and his sister was making it seem like it was Fern's fault??? Fern is a much better person than I am because Lord knows I would have said "see ya never." I enjoyed this book more than regular contemporary romance reads because I loved the complexity of the relationships not only with Will (this was actually my least favorite relationship) but with her mom, Peter, and her friends. Lastly, I believe that the epilogue was a sweet and heartwarming touch because it gave Fern an opportunity to redirect all that remaining love she had for her mother.

Meet Me At The Lake is sweet more than it is anything else. Fortune allows her characters to grow and change, as well as make mistakes. The chemistry between the love interests is realistic and well developed over their past day together, and the tension and sweetness between their older, more adult versions is well articulated, too. The fault that I find in Will’s struggle to be vulnerable and open I forgive due to his respect for Fern’s boundaries. The issue I take with Fern’s initial flaming reaction to a choice of Will’s is made up for by her expert handling of their later reconciliation. Annabel, too, has a scene which sells her for me, fully. Cute and believable, Meet Me At The Lake meets all the requirements for an easy beach read that incites only few, if any, eye rolls.
