I was a Norm MacDonald fan from way back, and adored his deadpan delivery and the twinkle in his eyes when he’d say a particularly good line. (I’m also a sucker for dimples. Ahem. Moving on.) I’d be delighted when he popped up from time to time, and loved his Midwestern ne’er-do-well brother character on The Middle, where he was perfectly cast. So I really wanted to love this. Alas, it was not to be. While it says right in the title it’s not true, it’s more than not true: it’s filled with outrageous lies. This is a Norm that shoots morphine, abuses his best friend, and is millions in the hole from gambling debts. The book is not poorly written, just tiresome in its quest to build an awful Norm. It reminded me quite a lot of John Waters’ Carsick, which was also lacking in human truth, building caricatures of outlandish people doing outlandish things for the pure shock value of having done so, with no humanity whatsoever. It’s just not my style. (See also: A Confederacy of Dunces. At least I’m consistent in my dislike.) I can’t recommend this one, but if this style is your thing, you may enjoy it.

Exactly what I was expecting and delightfully delivered.

This audiobook has it all: long winded jokes that purposely bomb for Norm’s own satisfaction, incredibly insensitive stories delivered with complete innocence, fabricated tales that add to the mythos (gambling addiction, the SNL firing over OJ, etc.), and my personal favorite of Norm intentionally mispronouncing simple words to dumb himself down (every single time he says film he pronounces it as fi-LIM). A true testament to Norm’s legacy and humor. Impossible to not read it in hindsight as Norm paying respect and saying farewell to all his friends on his own terms. RIP to the greatest.

“He’s dead?! I didn’t even know he was sick!”

This is Norm MacDonald. If you listen to the audio book you will have the pleasure of hearing himself tell the story. If you read the book you will still hear his voice. It's written like Norm MacDonald talks and it is not possible to not hear his voice delivering the lines.

It is a quick read, like a slightly longer moth joke (which also features in the book). It's not some tell-all where he trashes Don Ohlmeyer, but a story told by Norm MacDonald. If you do not know who Norm MacDonald is or if you know but do not like him then I doubt that this book will be for you.
