Caroline decided to return home to Oysterville, WA after a series of catastrophic events in NYC. Her hard won career as an emerging fashion designer plummets after her employer/mentor stole the designs from her first collection. But even worse, her best friend dies from an overdose leaving Caroline as guardian to her two small children Now it's back to where she always felt safe, but always wanted to leave, to find a way to remake her life, and make these children feel safe. Well written book that transcends the women's fiction genre and tackles domestic abuse and sexual abuse.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book after picking it up, reading the beginning, pitting it down for weeks then coming back to it. But I just blew through it in 3 days. This story has so many great ups and downs. I was particularly surprised by the twist in the end. I love the strength portrayed by Caroline and all of the other women in the story. Real life is messy and never goes the way you expect it to. This book shows that perfectly. There were a few awkward transitions and time lines; nonetheless I really enjoyed reading this book and will definitely seek out other novels by Susan Wiggs in the future.
Thanks so much to the publisher for sending me an ARC of this great novel!

I feel like the writing could have definitely been better. I know the message was important and I appreciate that.
This is definitely not my normal genre of book to read (I normally go more on the thriller side), but this book won my heart. It is so caring, and happy and sad (only slightly) and heartwarming. I loved that it kept me interested and made me not want to put it down.
Caroline flees NYC with her friend’s two children, Flick and Addie. Returning to her hometown, she tries to restore her professional clothing designing reputation while figuring out how to raise the kids. With the help of her large family, and the women she meets when she starts a group for victims of domestic violence, Caroline makes progress. In her personal life, a for,war flame will make his reappearance. A decent read, but a little too formulaic for me.
Great concept but too cliche and predictable. Good beach read.
Amazing book!! It was a bit mushy and predictable but I loved the heart behind the story. Women living in violence and drug addiction is a very real thing that we often want to sweep under the rug. The support and community ties had hallmark written all over it, this book is just the life so many of us want to live with all the ends tightly tied into a bow of happiness.
