When it comes to baking, you can’t go wrong with a Dorie Greenspan book in your kitchen. I have two of her other cookbooks and they are my go to guides to making cookies and breakfast treats. “Baking with Dorie: Sweet, Salty & Simple” is a great addition to the collection. The breakfast treats are so tempting, and I adore her cookie recipes taking on Parisian influences and elevating the basics to something special. There is also an entire chapter on Must-Knows with recipes for fillings, doughs, and sauces. A must have for every baker of any level. There is something for everyone in this book.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the digital ARC. I look forward to buying the hardcover for my kitchen this fall.

This is a beautiful cookbook just chock full of gorgeous recipes. The photos are beautiful, and the recipes are well written, with lots of great tips and suggestions for variations by the author. But to me, the best cookbooks are those with plenty of recipes that sound delicious, that don't require lots of fussy hard-to-find ingredients, AND that taste amazing. This book fits that bill! I tested three recipes before reviewing, and they were all excellent. The Lemony Yogurt Muffins were possibly the best textured muffins I have ever baked. The Caramel Crunch-Chocolate Chunklet Cookies had a lovely taste and texture reminiscent of a good pecan sandy. The Park Avenue Brownies were rich, fudgy, and delicious! I like that every recipe includes weight of ingredients in grams for accuracy. I'm looking forward to trying more of the recipes!

Baking with Dorie: Sweet, Salty Simple is a very well written no-nonsense cookbook for baked treats with recipes developed and curated by Dorie Greenspan. Due out 19th Oct 2021 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt on their Mariner imprint, it's 400 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.

This is a definitive, comprehensive work full of well made unfussy recipes which work consistently and well, every time. The emphasis is on simple high quality ingredients and reliable methods which anyone can recreate.

The introduction includes basic tips and background info along with a good overview over kitchen practice, measuring, and do's and don'ts. The following chapters contain the recipes, grouped thematically: breakfast, cake, cookies, pastries (cream-puffs & meringues), pies tarts cobblers & crisps (some decadently glorious deliciousness here!), salty/savory, and partial recipes basics & extras.

Recipes include a description, ingredients in a sidebar bullet list, followed by specific step by step directions. The ingredient measures are given in American standard, metric, and ounce measurements (yay!). The tips and alternatives are posted in small text sidebars with the recipes. I *really* like that the author gives good descriptions of what doughs and ingredients will look like at different steps in the process. I am not an advanced cook and those tips are really reassuring.

The photography is superlative throughout. Many of the recipes also include tutorial photos showing the different steps of folding, braiding, or manipulating ingredients and pastries/doughs.

Five stars. This would be a good choice for public library acquisition, home use, or culinary classroom. I will definitely acquire a physical print copy of my own.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I received this book as a Christmas present, and wasn't super enthused at first because I've never had just a "baking" cookbook (most of them are super intimidating!) - and I'd never heard of Dorie Greenspan. My MIL said this one was highly recommended by the Wall Street Journal, so she'd picked it up for me.

I am so happy to say that my initial impression was so, so wrong. This is a lovely book, and every single recipe I've tried from it has turned out to be perfect. The ratios are spot-on, the cooking times match my janky apartment oven perfectly, and my husband and I have gone through six boxes of butter since receiving this book.

I absolutely love to bake, and I want to get the rest of Dorie's cookbooks now, because I love the way she writes and how simple they are to make. I'm already planning out recipes for the rest of the year, and can't wait to bake my way through the entire book!

You had me at the cover! Gorgeous picture! I’m not a huge dessert person but apparently the cover weakened my disposition!

What did I like? It’s very important to incorporate pictures in a cookbook to make you want to pick it up and look at it. Scanning the pages I have to admit the layout and pictures are all aesthetically pleasing. From cookies, cakes, to pies there is a ton of recipes in this book! Some of the more intricate recipes scan two to three pages of details.

Would I recommend or buy? I’d love a copy! If your looking for a well rounded dessert cookbook then this is a beautiful one! The author did a wonderful job! Not all recipes were photographed though which was the only issue I had. Four stars!

I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review!

This was the first book I decided to read after signing up for Netgalley and I wasn’t let down. The author makes absolutely mouthwatering recipes through out the book seem like you don’t need to be a gourmet chef to make them. The recipes may not be the most simple but she explains them in a way that makes you feel like you can accomplish them easily. Even the pictures through out the book are stunningly beautiful.
