I'm taking a vampire literature course this semester, and seeing as this is the first vampire tale written in English, of course this is one of the works we started with. I completely understand and appreciate its importance in the English vampire canon, but as a piece itself I found it incredibly boring to read and quite a struggle to get through. So I would recommend it if you're interested in the history of the vampire in english literature, but as a stand alone work just to read for pleasure I'd say maybe skip this one in my opinion.

Inspired people to write more vampire stories and no doubt deserves credit for that. However, it wasn't as good as I thought. If I need to choose between Carmilla and this it would definitely be the former. I just wasn't very fond of the analytical writing that Polidori produced.

Short and sweet. Very interesting to see where the vampire genre all began, and spotting early versions of elements that later became enshrined as quintessential to it.
