I cannot believe quite how MESSY this book was!! I was expecting a pretty straight forward historical romance/fiction book, but this was not that. This was a back-and-forth of epic proportions where I kept getting yanked around without knowing quite what to expect. I really didn't know how this book was going to end until the last 30 pages or so!!!

I kept going back and forth on whether Eliza was going to end up with Somerset or Melville or not with either of them!! I didn't really have a strong preference for either of the male leads until the third act when it became achingly apparent who was the better of the two gentlemen.

There were times when I felt like the overall plot of the book got a bit bogged down in the intricacies of what the author was trying to say, and I do think the book suffers just a tiny bit for it. One thing that was a shining light in this plot was the relationship that was growing between Margaret and Caroline. The entire time I kept thinking, "Well if this isn't the most Lesbian behavior I have ever encountered" not actually thinking the author would make it canon!!!! And then she went ahead and gave us a full-fledged Lesbian plotline!! I was obsessed.

While this is definitely a fun book, I think it could have done with a little more fine-tuning and subversions of typical character archetypes.

Tall, dark and handsome love interest for the dub. Fantastic. Ate that shit up, no crumbs to be found.

4.5 There are so many retrospective regency type books currently attempting to use this voice, but only this one has avoided the heavy hackneyed eye rolling I reserve for others.
Eliza has good character balance of strength, intelligence, and wit without being an out of place modern woman running around Georgian England. She juggles two love interests (Melville and Somerset) as well as the pursuit of her personal growth as an artist in the wake of her husband’s death.
The banter between Melville and Eliza is truly charming, prepared as I was to find it disappointing and clichéd. I couldn’t decide who I wanted her to choose- I wanted everyone to win. And fancy a twist at the end. Well done.

No he entrado en la historia desde el primer momento, pero, una vez lo he hecho, me ha gustado mucho.

Thank you, NetGalley and Penguin Publishing for granting me an advanced copy of this book!

As a newbie to Regency romance, I have yet to find an author who manages to combine beautiful writing with an engaging plotline and lovable characters. I am happy to say that Sophie Irwin has achieved all of this in 'A Lady's Guide to Scandal'. This novel tells the story of newly widowed Eliza and the unique financial position she has found herself in. With the help of her best friend and cousin, Magaret, Eliza navigates the freedom widowhood has brought her, in a new city where acquaintances new and old make unexpected impressions on Eliza.
With a few wonderfully unexpected plot twists and entertaining side characters, we follow Eliza's journey to finding herself and possibly her future.

If you love Bridgerton and reading exciting heartwarming historical romances, Sophie Irwin's newest release is definitely for you! I will definitely be reading anything else Irwin has published. A new auto buy author for me!
