The second book in the Devouring Gray duology, and I was excited to read this one – so much so I reread the first book before diving into this one so I had the plot and atmosphere all fresh in my mind.
I was, to say the least, very intrigued as to how this would all play out. There were still plenty of mysteries left to unravel in the second half of duology, and a lot of damage to unpack from all the characters. I loved that we got more time with Isaac, who I think might have just been a little bit my favourite. Ezra had a big flashing warning sign over him from the outset, but I didn’t see the twist with him coming, so that was cool – I always appreciated not being able to work out what’s coming next.
There were some wonderful sweet moments of healing and growth for the characters, and I liked that there was so good gross descriptions of the woods to give this the atmosphere that I loved so much from the first book.
This all came together so well, I thought it was a great adventure and had wonderful character development that tied in so well with what was needed to save the day. I loved that it wasn’t a picture perfect ending for everything, but felt well evolved to who the characters were and they were going to be. Also, just as well Orpheus was okay. Just saying.
A great read, that I’m positive I’ll read again in the future.

this was remarkable! that picks up directly after the ending of The Devouring Gray. i did find myself losing interest (which knocked it down a star). the epilogue also left me asking A LOT of questions. i would still recommend this duology!

'Deck of Omens' picks up right where 'Devouring Gray' left off, with the Hawthornes and all of Four Paths aghast at Harper's vengeance.
Even in the peculiar world of this town the law doesn't touch magical actions, but there is a definite shift in power even as a new threat rises up from the Gray. Corruption is taking the trees of the forest from the inside out and, after Violet and Isaac try to strike at the Beast, the infection crosses over to people.
Further complications occur when other members of the Founders families begin to return to town. There is more family drama, surprise identity reveals, and so many feelings. Parents and kids just don't understand each other or their feelings.
This book gets to the heart of every mystery raised, but left me still wanting more. This series could easily have been expanded beyond two books, but its nice to see the series wrapped up.

Maybe a 4.5?
Not as good as the first one, mainly because this book focuses a lot on May and she's not a favourite of mine, but I still loved it.

This book surpassed The Devouring Gray and I was so hooked. It was more tense, dramatic, romantic and creepy than its predecessor. I loved each and every layer to the book and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. There were so much depth added to our beloved characters and it was wonderful seeing each of their personalities come out even more.
