The spooky vibes were still as good as the last book, but a lot of the magic/founder lore just didn't seem to fit as well as I hoped. And the big showdown seemed to start then stall for longer than necessary. It didn't seem to build tension like I think it was meant to. While I liked the twist of who the big bad was, the back story to how they became the big bad just didn't make sense to me. Plus, the revelations connected to the big bad completely messed with the motivations of the big bad in the last book.
Seriously, the history/truths discovered in this book BREAKS the reasoning of the previous one. Any amount of good atmosphere cannot fix that.
The characters were stellar just like in the last one. Loved their progression – until we got to the end. Some characters' motivations in the last chapter where everything was wrapped up just did not make sense. (see spoiler section if you want to know who specifically I thought broke character at the end).
I don't know if I would recommend reading this book if you liked the last one. I had a fun time, but the more I think about it, the more frustrated I get with how everything was revealed and wrapped up. If you don't think too hard about it, or don't remember the details of the last book, it won't be that bad of a read (except for some character choices after the showdown). I just wish the logic matched how well the atmosphere was written.
Excuse me, but May should not be able to use her power at the end of the epilogue! That completely messed with everything they fought to stop. Plus how is she able to harness it and not cause destruction? And when did she become the de facto historian of Four Paths, when she showed no desire to be that before or during this final showdown?
Also Justin and Harper should totally be together. There was too much build up for this relationship to just end after we only got one on page kiss (and a couple of off page months of the relationship). I do not get why they couldn't be in a long distance relationship while Harper went to college. I mean, she was staying IN STATE for college. Harper says that he was tying her to Four Paths, but her FAMILY was also tying her to Four Paths. What was one more tether in the grand scheme of things? Plus, the founding families are still a part of this town because they are now tasked with protecting the magic of the Four Paths forest.

The Deck of Omens. This book was a thriller from start to finish, much like the first one. I honestly couldn't put it down. This was my first time reading this book, and the twists and turns made it all the more enjoyable. I would highly reccommend anyone interested in fantasy, and mystical powers that this is a thoroughly enthralling read.
even better than the first one!!! the ending was super satisfying (god who am i??? what is this?? "satisfying ending" like WHAT??) and i'm deeply invested in all of these characters especially isaac and violet. my issues are all purely aesthetic (the library copy i got has an ugly cover and also a reinforced binding that made it very stiff) but please!! read this book!! i'm begging you!!
also, violet "kiss me about it" saunders and harper "it's you or me, babe, and i'm obviously picking me" carlisle are absolute icons

A magnificient ending to an amazing story!!!!!!!
I loved how the story wrapped up. The pacing was perfect, the twists unexpected and the ending bittersweet and fitting to the story. I'm looking forward to ending more from the author!
