I had a hard time getting through this book, about 200 pages in it took all my willpower not to dnf. I feel it should have been shorter then 500 pages. I hope warstorm is not the same, as it's even longer.

This book was a probably my favourite in the series so far. I liked seeing how Mare fought through and endured her captivity,
coming out determined and more conscious of the people she loves and how much they have sacrificed for her.
. It was also interesting  seeing more of Maven and getting a teensy bit of his backstory while Mare was captive. I found the different perspectives refreshing and a good way of conveying events while different characters were out of commission.

I feel this book developed the characters and their connections more, and was less of a glorified newblood-collecting montage *violently side-eyes Glass Sword*. I liked the battle scenes a lot, and seeing how the plot twisted as a result of court intrigue and politics between the different nations.

I originally read the series because my sister wanted to sell the books. She stopped at King’s Cage because it was, quote unquote, “too dark”, but honestly it seems about as “dark” as any YA fantasy novel with a rebellion in its plot. I’m mind you, this is coming from someone who read The Book Thief, They Both Die At the End, and The Poppy War for fun, so I guess it’s a matter of opinion.

King's Cage is a clever mixture of politics, war, love, friendship, trust and betrayal. The book took off slowly. Honestly, the only reason I was able to get through the first half of the book was because I knew that the first two books of this series had been really good. But boy it was hard to keep reading, due to a total lack of action in the plot. Once I got through the first half, though, something started finally happening and from there, just like in Red Queen and Glass Sword, I was unable to put the book down. Many of the main characters grew and my view of them deepened a lot during the book (especially Mare and Maven) which was enjoyable to witness. The whole setting of the story also became clearer and more secrets were revealed.
The author's tone is fairly serious and dark throughout the book, and there are little joyful details or motifs, which makes the book a little heavy to read (that also explains why it took me three whole months to read this book - felt like a forever!). However, for the most part the plot is interesting enough to keep the reader's attention all the way to the end.
I liked King's Cage, after all, and I cannot wait to read the fourth and the final part of this series!
