Sophie Kinsella was one of my favorite authors when I was a couple decades younger. Perhaps my reading taste has matured, but I found this latest book just "ok". The formula is pretty predictable & I found myself hurrying to finish only so I could move on to something else.
3.5 stars. Quite enjoyable, though the main character drove me crazy for most of the book.
I enjoyed the book as it made me chuckle a few times here and there. The story had me hooked on what would happened especially with the harsh realities of Ava and Matt’s incompatibility with each other. Ava’s character was annoyingly in your face but I appreciate the author showed a contrast between the two main characters.
Personally, I feel as though the book should have stopped at the seven month mark where she finished her book. I think that when they broke up it was a very good and mutual understanding. The ending itself was kind of cute but it was a little too unrealistic for me. Also contrary to a lot of people’s opinions- I couldn’t stand the dog. She should have really just looked for someone in a dog shelter

I think that Sophie Kinsella just may not be for me. This is the second book I've read by her and I'm not impressed. I won't say I wasted my time, I did chuckle a few times, Matt had a few moments that made me go "awww", but ultimately this book is a no for me. Ava is a hot mess. I'm sure she's suppose to be quirky and relatable but she's all over the place from what she wants to do with her life to her "saving" random items, to the denial of her terribly behaved dog. I liked Matt enough, he was a little tense for me but it made sense for his character. Their relationship was ridiculous. I didn't really feel the chemistry, like not even in the beginning when they were in Italy. At 23% in they were in love and I was like how? And why? It was a fling and it should have stayed that way. I'm not sure I've ever read a book where I was hoping the main characters did not end up together.
Ava goes on a writing retreat and comes back not with a finished book but with the perfect mate. The problem is they are perfect together when they know nothing about each other and the every day is the writing retreat. What happens when they go back to their lives? Will they still be the perfect match? What is perfect? How do you build a life you love?

Ava and Matt meet while on a writer’s retreat in Italy but when they return to their normal lives they find that they’re perhaps not as compatible after all. I really wanted to love this one and I feel like this is an unpopular opinion but I’m afraid overall it just didn’t work for me.
I really loved the start when they were at the retreat but once they returned to England the storyline started to frustrate me. Ava’s quirkiness became irritating and I really disliked some of the plot lines. She seemed like a caricature of a real character, e.g. the lengths she went to to force Matt to become vegetarian was bizarre.
I loved the start and liked the ending but personally the middle section just wasn’t for me.

I’ve always enjoyed SK’s book but this one is quite unfortunate. The main characters are unlikeable and cringy, and I really did try with this. I’m on page 150 but I’m already thinking of the time I’m wasting on this and cannot absolutely move forward with this book.
It took me a little bit to get into this one. I’m a longtime fan of Kinsella, and the formula was there. The characters were just a little hard to connect with.
Overall, I enjoyed, but I was more fascinated with the friends, rather than the main characters.

I generally enjoy Sophie Kinsella, but I think her style needs a refresh. Have her stories always contained so much regressive storytelling where women compete with other women for the same dude? The physical comparisons to other women are also off putting. So many better rom coms out there these days.
