Devoured doesn't begin to explain what I did to this book. I had only read one of the Kate Daniels book when I started this book and now I feel a bit spoiled but I don't care. Andrea Nash is such a great character and the dynamic between her and Raphael cracked me up. I laughed until I cried at the 'Mine' and the purple carpet. I hope there's more to this series, I can see more stories about Andrea and her mate, Roman, and the entire clan (pun intended). I rated it five stars because six wasn't an option. Read this. Read it now before you do anything else.

I didn't read this book during the first read of the Kate Daniels series and I'm gutted to say that I really didn't enjoy this very much. I'm not the biggest Andrea fan and I don't think a whole book about her was necessary.

Gunmetal Magic is an amazing tale of urban fantasy. This is by far the best book written by the husband and wife team, Ilona Andrews. Kate Daniels is one of my favorite urban fantasy series and Gunmetal Magic is the first spin-off from this series. Ilona and Gordon have created an incredible world of magic, mystery and suspense with Andrea Nash at its center.

Andrea Nash is a flawed and broken woman. This is her story of self-discovery and acceptance. She was severely brutalized as a child while living in a Bouda clan in Texas. Ever since, she has fought against being a hyena shapeshifter. Her world consisted of being a Knight and enforcing law and order. In the beginning of Gunmetal Magic, she is truly lost. No longer a Knight, she finds herself waking up night after night in her closet, holding a knife and protecting herself from ghosts. Ilona and Gordon described her pain and agony with such depth that I could really feel her pain. Watching her struggle and emerge into her true self, was amazing to behold.

Besides having to deal with her abusive ghosts, Andrea had to deal with her former lover, Raphael. He is the male alpha of the Bouda Clan where his mother, Aunt B, is the true Alpha. Raphael has been spoiled his entire life. He has been coddled and has never been denied anything. When Andrea lost her Knighthood, she retreated into her own world to heal. Raphael interpreted that as a total rejection of him and his clan. Andrea can’t forgive him for not being patient and rejecting her. Will love be enough and salvage their relationship? In most of the Kate Daniels series, the romance aspect is not a big part of the overall plot. However, in Gunmetal Magic, Andrea and Raphael’s relationship play a significant role throughout the book. Ilona and Gordon don’t portray their relationship as all moonlight and roses. It’s rough and unpredictable (watch out for purple carpet!), very fitting for an urban fantasy novel.

I think my favorite character is Ascanio, the 15 year-old male Bouda that works as an intern at Cutting Edge. He provides a bit of welcomed comic relief. He is full of spit and vinegar and wants to prove himself. In the beginning, Ascanio is a sarcastic young kid. By the end, he is taking orders and proving that he can be trusted. He respects Andrea and wants to help her but at the same time; he doesn’t want to upset the Bouda Clan. He is able to find a solution that helps Andrea come to terms with the clan. Overall, he is really a great character and I hope he gets more time in the upcoming books.

Another amazing character is the city of Atlanta. Of all the Kate Daniels books, Gunmetal Magic has the best descriptions of the Post-Shift, apocalyptic Atlanta. The images are so rich you feel can magic dripping off the trees. Ilona and Gordon’s Post-Shift is so unique. When the magic hits and the technology goes down, everything changes. It’s a magical world where people ride horses, mules and camels and skyscrapers come crumbling down. It’s dark but vivid. The magic has texture that you can feel throughout the book.

Gunmetal Magic is an incredible read. Once you enter the Kate Daniel World, you won’t want to come out.

I was lucky because I managed to get an ARC. This was my first ever and I was so happy because Ilona Andrews is one of my favorite authors. Gunmetal Magic is a wonderful read that brings you into Andrea's head. You learn so much more about her that you didn't know before. We also see a new side of Andrea now that she's post-Order. There is plenty of action and it's extremely hard to put down.

In simple words...must read!!

Not as gripping as the main Kate stories, but well worth reading for completeness.

~ 5 Gunmetal Magic Stars ~

There is just something special about the Andrews team writing that will capture you and take you on an action-packed adventure through the lives and world of their characters.

In Gunmetal Magic we get Andrea and Raphael’s story with Kate and Curran making a few short appearances. From what happened in [b:Magic Slays|8559047|Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5)|Ilona Andrews|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1288727226s/8559047.jpg|13427398], things are tense between this couple and Andrea is still not sure if she wants to join the Pack. She spends the book finding her place in the world.

I absolutely loved the development and struggles Andrea goes through. We get to learn about her history (which is sad) and everything that is going on between her and Raphael. The history we learn gives us great insight as to why she is so leery in joining the Pack and we also get to see her finally come to terms with her beast-kin side as the novel develops. The relationship between Andrea and Raphael is officially over or is it? These two are a power couple, both Alphas and both Powerful. They both do a number on each other, but we see how the shapeshifters work through their problems and well the best part was Andreas revenge on Raphael.

The secondary characters are just as entreating. I love Barabas. He is such a great character. We also get to learn more about the teenage bouda, Asciano, who starts to play more of a roll.

Their is also a Bonus Novella - Magic Gifts, which I love.

This novella is in Kate’s POV and is during the same time frame as [b:Gunmetal Magic|12288282|Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels, #5.5)|Ilona Andrews|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1331230049s/12288282.jpg|17264774]. I always love return to Kate and Curran. A murder mystery takes place with a kids life in danger. Plus we finally see Kate deal with The Mercenary Guild and she resolve this issue in Grand Style.

If the book has Ilona Andrews name on it you are guaranteed a extraordinary entertaining read. They are a must read for anyone!

These books do not ever disappoint. This is an Andrea Nash story which is an arc to the Kate Daniels books. In this one, I got a lot better look at Andrea and what makes her tick. She is a beautiful, tough woman who is learning how to navigate relationships. Because of an abusive past, trust does not come easy but she's learning and trying in order to repair damage she has done with the one man she has ever loved. At the same time, Andrea is reinventing her idea of family to include the people who have stood by her side no matter what. Additionally, this book gives readers a more in depth look at Roman, who turned out to be funny, sweet, and kind of sexy. Of course Andrea can't see past her feelings for Raphael.

One word of advice, there is a Kate Daniels story at the end of this book. It runs concurrently, so you could read either one first. If I could do it again, I would probably read Magic Gifts first.

Since I couldn't get my hands on the 6th book in the Kate Daniels series but was still really wanting to be in that world reading wise I picked this book up and I'm glad I did. I liked how much we got to see Andrea develop. The thing is, a lot of it this is repeated information from the Kate Daniels books. So, there is that but I suspect that it will be good to have read this book before I read the sixth book, and I'm going to try to find the two short stories that were published between books 5 and 6 while I wait for book 6.

I really like Andrea but this book is not of the Kate Daniels category. I don't understand how these authors could write such a standard/ typical predictable romance novel.
