This one was just ok for me. I'm not sure what I was expecting...but for me this FELT long because I was pretty bored for most of it. I knew what was happening pretty early on...so I'm not sure if it was supposed to be a big reveal at the end and a build up to that? But it just didnt hit me like most of the novellas I've been reading lately. It was fine...not sad I read it...it just didnt do much for me.

Beautiful & depressing! I think this was the first reading experience where I didn’t hate the villain. (Is that weird?) The way the story was told had a bit of magic and innocence to it, which was not something I was expecting. This was excellent.

this one hooked me from the beginning.
I had read a little preview of it and HAD to have it.

I would've liked to have heard about Maggie's reaction to the ending of the story. I don't want to give too much away...would she have killed herself? or would she have tried to start all over again??

either way, i liked this one and it was a fast and creepy read. I highly recommend it to anyone into creepy/scary books.

The story focuses on two young boys, Davey and Ronny, and their isolated life on a farm with Maggie. Those who come into their life don't seem to stay long and when someone new arrives , the cycle starts all over again. ⁣

This novella teeters between being horrifying and heartbreaking. It is told through the childlike perspectives of Davey and Ronny. I couldn't help but fall for these kids because their personalities are so pure. As the novella progresses, we start to understand that something isn't right as a series of sinister realizations bleed through the innocence. ⁣

I love this story. ⁣

A quick, but dull read that reaches for excellence and falls quite short. The story suffers from its length—there isn’t any time with each character to care at all about them, and I quite frankly couldn’t have cared less. There wasn’t any substance behind them; they felt rather empty. Faceless for sure, and not the way intended.

I also felt there was a lot of repetitive description—particularly about carrion bones and summer giving way to autumn—but it was constantly repeated which just left the feeling that the characters were suspended in amber. But, the world they were in was supposed to be very real, while everything else wasn’t quite. (The best I can explain without giving away the story.)

The whole “twist,” or plot point (since I don’t think it was supposed to be a big surprise or anything) was obvious from page 4 and not well done. There was much left to be desired and with such an unfortunately boring cast, it just left me disappointed.
