As soon as I closed the book I turned to my husband and said, “That was weird. I liked it.”

This book definitely isn’t for everyone, but I quite enjoyed how the story unfolded. It was strange, grotesque, and thought provoking. Can’t ask for much more than that in a good horror novel.

I don't know what to make of this book... devilman crybaby had a baby with made in Abyss and some other weird cocktail of nonsensical stuff.

The start I liked, I was enjoying the little spin on viruses and a pandemic of sort. It felt almost believable. Part II comes along and it kinda started to slide slightly. It felt like I was reading a different book in a way (and not in a good way) but I was going to finish! I was committed!
By the time part III came along, I was completely lost. What the hell is going on? The writing became really repetitive and I just wanted it all to end.

SpoilerWhat is it with the beasts sewing themselves together?! why Octopui? How many times does the author need to use the reference to "rat brained"

I just feel like it all just fell of a cliff at the end into a messy pile and that's pretty disappointing.

I think I'm being pretty generous with a 2 * review.

I loved this book. I really really hope there will be a sequel. It was very fast paced and easy to read. After reading one too many horrors written by men, this book couldn't come sooner for me, it was so refreshing to have actually complex female characters in the horror genre.

The themes that present themselves in the beginning are quite triggering for me (pandemics, getting ill, germs etc.) but I'm glad I muscled through because it was so worth it. Though I wouldn't recommend for people who have similar triggers to do the same. It gets very graphic. Only do so if you think you can handle it.

I think some writers can overdo gore which I want to give credit to this book because it absolutely does not do that. In fact, I think it lended itself to a lot of plot twists which just made it a very exciting read. You definitely don't know what's going to happen even until the very end.
Im only docking half a star because the ending wasn't as satisfying as id hoped and certainly left room for a sequel which, if it doesn't happen, would make for a bad ending.

Overall, I would recommend this book to others and would read again.

Your tongue flicks the brain stem, the fluids, and the breakdown of the human condition into depravity. The blood lust of this novel is strong with body horror, gory imagery, and woman’s wrongs. The pandemic sets a precedent of the human condition and the ways in which people are careless in how they infect one another through fruitless interactions. This is very much a pandemic novel about a monstrous pandemic of human behavior. Be not afraid pandemic style?
The gore is a metaphor for how we interact with each other and choose to ignore the needs of others. The selfishness of each perspective is explored through the characters lack of awareness in how their actions harm others. The brutality of this novel is a great metaphor for how the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the course of human history. With a few quips weaved in that tackle the dogma and harm from the Trump regime.
Loved every blood sack filled the narrative but I wish that there was an ultimate connection between the start of each woman’s perspective. We have the indulger, the pleaser, and finally the researcher. These three perspectives really set the tone for the behaviors explored throughout the pandemic. Each perspective begins right in the action and we really see the blood lust in each woman’s eyes. We know their purpose and their why – but we want to see the scene before the blood splatters everywhere. Dive into this if you can stomach well-written body horrors! This cover is absolutely terrifyingly menacing and beautiful.

I went into this book blind and wow I couldn’t have predicted what I was getting myself into.

Not normally a fan of pandemic horror but this one was done on such a way it didn’t feel like reliving COVID. Each character’s story was so interesting with Erin being our first glimpse of the virus, to Savanah being the tie with the ‘gods’, to Marevah….being whatever the hell she was? The ‘chosen one’ I guess?

The end was pretty abrupt but the descriptions of the body horror, and the overall vibes of the book were amazing
