It's been probably twenty years since I last read these books and most of that twenty years has had this story rewritten by the movie trilogy. So it's pretty fascinating to read this again and feel and experience the differences.

The novel is just oddly structured. It loses some of the cosmic horror at certain points and then slaps it down hard at other times. What continues to impress me coming back to Tolkien after reading hundreds of other epic fantasy novels is just how he never loses track of the personal stories and conflicts.

But, yeah, I can't really be objective with this kind of stuff. So much of my life is caught up between these pages. So much of my childhood was spent right here.

92/100

As good as The Two Towers is, I think this reading solidified my impression that it's the weakest of the three books. That stretch where Frodo and Sam are trekking across mundane landscape is the least interesting portion of the trilogy.

But, hey, I'm critiquing one of my favorite stories ever.

I am not really into Frodo and Sam relationship of master and slave. Sam needs to get a life outside of Frodo that's some unhealthy relationship there that's glorified.

Golum was my fav character just because he was the only one to spark an interest or any sort of emotion.

The story also ends at really odd point.

Like in previous post, the characters are bland and uninteresting while the writing is really dry and boring.

I do enjoy the world building and fairy tale like magic system

There are some things that it is better to begin than to refuse, even though the end may be dark.
