Through journal prompts and reflection questions, Playing Big provides actionable steps to emerging into our better selves. Mohr argues that it is the inner critic which prevents women from boldly speaking up when it comes to their needs. Essentially becoming our own biggest roadblocks to success. I found Mohr's work connected to other books I have read about overcoming fear while pursuing one's calling. What I liked was that Playing Big levered self-compassion as a tool for growth while recognizing the difficult road ahead. If you are a women who feels like you need to "have it all" while giving up your authentic self Mohr's model may be just what you are looking for to change your perspective.

As someone who struggles with feeling like I'm not "doing enough" or living up to my potential, I had high hopes for this book. The book did contain a lot of practical advice (targeted towards women) for stepping up your career or creative endeavors, as well as bit of, er, more spiritual (for lack of a better word) advice on finding your calling and embracing your true self.

While some of the advice is directly applicable to whatever you're doing at the moment, a lot of the advice was targeted at women transitioning to a new career path, starting a new endeavor, or taking their hobby or passion to the next level - none of which really apply to my situation. I found the chapters on discovering your inner mentor, dealing with praise and criticism, communicating, and self-discipline to be very helpful, while chapters discussing how to respond to one's calling and achieving specific goals were less helpful (probably because I did not have a specific goal in mind when reading this book).

I hate books like this. I did not want to read it, but a friend told me I would relate to it & get a lot out of it. Honestly, I don't think I would have *read* it either, but the only format my library had was an audiobook, and that worked REALLY well for me. I got a LOT out of it, and have already readjusted some of my professional approaches to things. This feels like a book I should check back in on every couple of years or so. Strong recommend, especially for the strong badass women in my life (and the people who live and work with them.)

I wanted to really like this book but it just didn’t do it for me. The only exception was one of the exercises I found to be quite helpful/insightful (meeting your inner mentor) but the rest fell flat for me. However, that’s not to say I son’t admire what the author’s purpose of the book was - just that maybe I wasn’t the target audience for it at this time.
