I'm SO UNWELL THIS WAS SO GOOD
"Words can be terrible when the truth is unwelcome."
This book!!!!! I was honestly not expecting to adore this as much as I did.
This book follows Lark, a woman without a voice in a world ravaged by war. Her mother silenced her as a child in an attempt to protect her from the people who would want to harm her for her gift. She's taken as a hostage of the king, Tiras,(a very bad thing to do but I'm in love with him pls look away) in order to encourage Lark's father to send reinforcements to the war effort. But love n chaos ensues

Surprisingly good and intriguing pick-up. I am usually not one for fantasy (I feel characters/world-building/story lines are often overwrought with densely over-created/explained plots/characters/histories--can't all be Tolkien), but I felt the author did not over do it: the characters developed well and the storyline surrounding the "Gifted" was well envisioned and woven throughout the story.
I'm just gonna go lay in a corner and cry of happiness
Predictable romance with fantasy trappings, marred by amateurish English mistakes: "bans" instead of "banns," "ladies maid," "loathe to leave" instead of "loath," and more.
Why do I try to read fantasy? Gahhh! I never enjoy it. I think I'll like it, so I start, and then it takes me forever to get through even the first 25% of the book. If I try reading fantasy again, someone smack some sense into me!
I went into it not knowing a single thing and with no expectations. I didn't even read the synopsis. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to go fifteen years without speaking. I was really surprised with the major plot twist at the end. So many things happened that I was feeling overwhelmed with joy and also anxiety. Lark is put to the test and we see how much she truly loves the king. He gave her-her voice back. Without him she would have probably went the rest of her life without speaking. I really loved the story line. In a way it reminded me of shadow and bone by Leigh Bardugo. You have a girl with a gift and a king with a gift as well, Fighting against bird like beasts.
I think I would have enjoyed this even more had I not listened to the audio. Overly dramatic narration took me out of the story at times, but great story overall.
