i love the character susannah, so it pains me to say that a book with her name in the title of it (for, by the way, no reason that i can determine) is one of the worst books i've ever read. this novel epitomizes all of the worst qualities of the dt series: to name a couple, needless and cutesy meta-fiction, and silly (and probably offensive) monologues from the perspective of a person with some cartoonish strain of disassociative personality disorder.

what's worse: the small amount of success it could've had as a novel, the vaguely captivating pay-offs it promises (the birth of mordred, the conclusion to jake and callahan's rescue of susannah) don't even take place until the next god damn novel! such a disappointment. if it wasn't for the (surprisingly) good quality of the final dt book, _song of susannah_ would've ruined the entire series. it is a suspense-sacrificing diversion from a plot that has been building tension since the first book, and contributes nothing more than a list of mistakes for which the final novel of the series just barely compensates.

I LOVE the way Stephen King put himself in this book. It's so brilliantly done.

This book focuses on Susannah Dean as she battles possession.
Her companions race to save her as the lines between fiction and reality begin to blur.

I like Susannah, she’s a crazy, complex character and probably my favorite. For that reason, I thought I’d like this book more.
I’ve been spacing out these books as I near the end of the series, mainly because I am just kind of ... over it.

As for Stephen King writing himself into the story, I’m not sure how I feel about it.
Maybe if I were enjoying the series more, I might have liked that metafictional twist, but to me, it just felt like grasping at straws to stay interesting, and at this point, six books in... I’m not buying it.

I think it’s been a while since a book made me say WTF every ten pages, the way he incorporated himself into the book is something I would’ve never guessed would happen 2 books ago.

For me, this is the weakest one in the series so far. It didn’t need to be as long as it was and although there is a bit of action, it also feels slow, like nothing much is happening. I’m disappointed with the lack of development of Susannah - she should be fighting, she is a fighter, but she just gets swept along without any real agency.

The whole plot line with Stephen King inserting himself into the story and the ending also feels very unnecessary and adds nothing to the story. It reads as though Stephen King wrote it without any real idea of where to take the story after Wolves of the Calla. It’s a shame as I’ve loved the series so far.
