The romance between Stevie and David came out of nowhere for me. I do enjoy the importance Stevie places on trying to maintain her friendship with Janelle and it would be an easy step to say Stevie is autistic-coded, though it is unclear if that was intentional.

Overall, the book gave me “Wednesday” TV show vibes minus the fantasy. Multi-mystery with quirky characters (some likeable & some not at all). While I’ll probably finish this series eventually, I’m not in a rush.

Murder, drinking
This book has two stories intertwined. One is from the 1930s of how Albert, (one of the richest men in America during the time built), the school and the crime that happened there when a student went missing and was found murdered. As well as when Albert's wife and daughter went missing.
Mixed with the current day story of the school and what is happening there when Stevie, (a wanna be detective), is a student and attempts to solve the murder and disappearance of two of her classmates.
This book felt very dull and bland. I didn't like the writing style at the beginning. It was like over halfway through, and there was nothing to it. There was really no plot, no mystery, no nothing. It was just a lot of character and plot building with excessive amounts of descriptions. It didn't really feel like there was much of a point to it until the last few chapters.
Minor: Murder

I ate up the setting of this book. Ellingham Academy would have been my dream school at this age and I loved all of the different personalities of the characters. It could be over the top at times, but that's to be expected in a YA book. That was part of the fun, too. It's also the definition of a page-turner. As soon as I got to the end I had to start The Vanishing Stair.
