This was fairly quiet and slow moving, but I enjoyed the characters. I like watching Persephone find herself in Hades and embrace her power.
I didn't realize when I started reading that the author considers this YA, so I was a little disappointed it wasn't smut. I'm glad to have read this, but I don't know that I would have finished it if I hadn't put it on a Reading Challenge - it was just too easy to set aside, which is why it took me three months to read it.

as a fan of greek mythology and a practicing hellenic pagan i read my fair share of retellings.
this was pretty okay, and it was gay so it gave it a head start.
the ending was a bit rushed but i enjoyed not seeing the same tropes every other hades/persephone retelling has.
overall i enjoyed reading it.

"Hades offers Persephone sanctuary in her land of the dead, so the young goddess may escape her Olympian destiny. But Persephone finds more than freedom in the underworld. She finds love, and herself. The Dark Wife is a YA novel, a lesbian revisionist retelling of the Persephone and Hades myth."
Wow, I really loved this retelling!! The differences in Hades character traits from the typical was so refreshing to read. I loved how caring and thoughtful she was. However the story was pretty slow and lacked a lot of plot. If the plot was just Persephone and her time in the underworld I think that would've been fine, it just seemed like the author tried to just barely squeeze in something complicated. I really wish we could've seen more power and action from the characters. I loved the visuals and ending of this book.
fav moments:
- gem room
-horses
-cerbeus

boring and the romance was meh. The rape at the start of the book didn't play in favor (it's a sc but still...) and the fact that Persephone moved on so fast from her previous tragic relationship was so absurd.
Moderate: Rape and Emotional abuse

Very surprised to see this doesn't have a higher average rating tbh. Maybe I'm just sappy and overly mushy, but this did it for me, moreso than I was anticipating. Truly a beautiful sapphic Hades/Persephone moment and I loved every second of it.

I really didn't connect with the characters or the story and I really didn't feel like continuing. I'm sad, I was really excited to read a Hades and Persephone retelling! And sapphic on top of it.. but I was saddly not enough to keep me interested
