Come for the time travel mystery, stay for the cautionary tale about the effects of compulsive escapism on an otherwise charmed life

This book is an amalgamation of historical fiction and sci-fi time shifting adventure. I could see this being an inspiration for the Outlander series. Unlike that story, the time travel concoction only lasts a few hours at a time. The story centers around Richard Young, a man who is staying at a scientist friend’s country house. His friend encourages him to experiment with the time travel potion he has recently invented before his family joins him for holiday. Richard finds the experience addicting and finds himself slipping between the present and past more and more often until he becomes torn between his present life and the one he would like to have in the past.

I realized I listened to the abridged version, which makes me wonder what I have missed from the original. I found the story creepy and also full of a wonderful tension as Richard becomes more disoriented and the reality of the two times/places becomes blurred.

Book was recommended by Daphne du Maurier’a fan and I can tell why she is recommended and well known between readers.

A unique time travelers story. Language is very beautiful, rich and telling.

It’s very odd ,sometimes, to read a book about a place where you’ve been to.

- 3 stelle e mezzo -
