The Toll-Gate is basically Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer but by Georgette Heyer and for an older audience. *shrugs* I liked it, but not as much as most of Heyer's other novels.
I love Georgette Heyer, and this was a fun one. More mystery than romance, but the romance was very sweet. The book moved quickly and listening while I worked made the tedious tasks of scraping and painting much more enjoyable!
Immense fun! One I've not read before, and definitely one I'll read again.

I am a big fan of Heyer's Regency romances, but favor primarily those told primarily from the perspective of one of her wrong female heroines. The Toll-Gate is told almost exclusively from the hero's perspective and is therefore not quite as much fun for me as, say, Frederica or The Grand Sophy. This is especially unfortunate because the heroine, Nell, seems like a character that could have ranked right up there with my other favorites had she been developed
That said, this story is a lovely, light tale told with classic Heyer wit and charm. One warning - you might want to brush up on your period cant before casting your oglers over these pages! Enjoy!

7/10 I find that my favorite Heyer's often are the ones that take place away from the drawing room. This was no exception. Generally my favorite element of Heyer is her characters. The characters in this novel were good (and per usual the hero was to swoon for) but they just weren't quite up to snuff. The characters being good but not great kept this from being 4 stars for me. For once I found myself enjoying the plot more than the characters when often the characters carry the story... which is usually the case with my 3 starred Heyer reviews. It was a nice change.

This is one of my favourite Heyers, even if the crime plot isn't as strong as it could be. I love Jack's unconventional nature and his complete affection for the local people he finds himself surrounded with after embarking on his accidental career as a toll gate guard. The romance is genuinely touching and I also love Nell's quiet practicality. They're a couple who you know are going to have a great, fun married life surrounded by people that they like, and they're going to start it off by dancing at the wedding of Rose and her highwayman. <3
Very much reminded me of the Unknown Ajax (the one where the guy pretended to be slow), but the adventure and supporting characters (BENN) were more agreeable to me in this one. The romance was horrible, taking place in about a week, and very easily forgettable..
