A book starring a lumberjack Viking pilot single dad? It's like Daphne wrote this just for me! Finn Hebert comes from the enemy camp in Adele Gagnon's eyes - rival timber company family, and a father who took down her own. Not that Finn had anything to do with that, but for the longest time, it's hard for Adele to separate the two.

Adele is this strong, determined woman in charge of the mechanic shop for her family timber company. Meanwhile Finn has moved back to Lovewell, Maine after finishing up his time in the Navy, determined to provide a good life for his ten-year-old daughter, Merry. She is the cutest, though even she isn't safe from the small town gossip about her grandfather's misdeeds.

Needless to say, the attraction between Finn and Adele is quite forbidden, and Adele struggles internally with the fact that she could see the enemy as anything but. It's made especially hard when Finn takes a job with the Gagnon timber company as a pilot. There is so much shared history and tragedy between the two families, but Finn is determined to wear her down. The tension between these two is so good, resulting in some fun and spicy scenes...and games.

Finn's relationship with his daughter melted my heart. He is such a good dad. Of course, no Lovewell novel is complete without Clive the moose causing at least a bit of chaos.

I love this story. I love the Gagnons and all of the women who have joined the family in previous novels. And now, Daphne has me falling in love with the Hebert men. Jude, I'm looking at you. I really hope we get to see more of them in the future!

Thank you so much to Daphne for an ARC!

What I liked:
No third act breakup
He's a simp for her (and we love to see it)

What I didn't like:
Pretty much everything else

I hated the FMC. Yes, she was strong. Yes, she was empowered. And the story reminded us of that every third paragraph. No, literally. It was actually this often. I get the whole grumpy character thing, I get that she was angry and had issues channeling that anger properly, but she was terrible to him. The things she said were horrible, and she was saying these things even as they together. She had a huge rant in the beginning about how badly men treat her, stringing her along and barely giving her the time of day because they get insecure by her job and independence and then she TREATS HIM THE EXACT SAME WAY FOR MONTHS.

Oh and my favorite part was her pages-long chastising of the town members (including the mayor) for doing and saying things she herself had been doing and saying to the MMC throughout the book.

Yeah, that happened.

And he praises her and thanks her for it, like she didn't feel shame for the way she was acting while continuing to act the exact same way.

She kept him as her dirty little secret until like 96% through the book.

Read that again. I'm not exaggerating.

It was apparently never the right time to come out because [insert any reason that will buy her more time].

Lastly, the entire book is told in past-tense from internal monologue from the characters except for a few parts here and there. That's the most annoying way to read, and is the top advice for any writer ever: show, don't tell.

*sigh*

Kudos for not having a third act breakup. I actually wanted him to leave her ass though.

Edit:
I just remembered how cringey it was that the author tried to show how good of a relationship he still has with his ex (who he co-parents with), by having him constantly talk about her like she's still his woman, being protective of her, calling her "his girl". Like??? You can be a good friend with someone and still have respectful boundaries that won't make your significant other (and anyone else who hears you talking like this) question things.

Speaking of which, this is technically a single parent romance, but we only see the daughter a few times and then everything else is casual mentions after the fact. I wouldn't read this if you're specially looking for the single parent trope.

2.5/5🌶

I’ve been so excited for Adele’s book!! The fierce Gagnon sister who can keep her brothers in line? I want to be like her when I grow up. Throughout the books, we’ve seen her anger and how much she despises the Hebert family. Her anger is palpable in this book, but it goes so much deeper, and my heart broke for her. Adele’s been hesitant to get close to anyone, especially with most guys being intimidated by a strong, independent woman. Until Finn. Oh Finn. I love this viking lumberjack with my whole heart. The way he communicates his feelings, the way he calls out Adele and doesn’t get intimidated by her, the way he doesn’t let her run away from her feelings. It’s all so good. These two have chemistry from the beginning, but their family histories proved to be a major obstacle. Finn, though, knew what he wanted and he wasn’t going to be scared off, and I was so happy to see him knocking down Adele’s walls. Both of them have their own insecurities to work through, yet they both feel seen with each other. They’ve found their person. These two challenge each other and support each other, they’re explosive, and they’re perfect together. Wood Riddance has the best enemies-to-lovers, black cat/ golden retriever, single dad vibes and I’m here for it all. Definitely recommend!

Book 4 in the Lovewell Lumberjack series

Dual POV

"It took a lot to make my sweet baby growl like that, but the spawn of Satan would do it, for sure."

I have wanted Adele's book since the first book in this series, and let me tell you, it was everything and more! Adele is a strong FMC. She says what she wants to say. She doesn't hold back, and she protects who she loves. Finn is an amazing single father. He goes after what he wants. Together they are a force of nature.

Let's not forget Merry. She is beyond adorable. She's sassy, and she knows it. I loved how she just wanted Finn to be happy.

I will say, I did not appreciate Finn's hatred towards Clive!

One of my favorite scenes was at the diner when Adele was yelling at everyone.

"You don't get pie."
"Pie is for the kind people who don't gossip about or judge others."

This book wraps up the mystery of the murder of Adele’s father and Henri's accident. It was the perfect ending to the perfect book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

FINN HEBERT!!! I loved the Gagnon men in the first 3 books, but oh man, Finn was such a nice surprise. Big Viking Lumberjack single dad with a heart of Gold??? I loved him and his daughter. His relationship with his ex and their co-parenting style was great.

Also, let's talk about the way he was absolutely gone for Adele for the longest time!! Obviously, their warring lumberjack family drama made him enemy number 1 for Adele most of her life (made worse by his father's criminal activity - seriously, read the first 3 books if you haven't!!) I loved how he treated Adele from the very beginning. He truly SAW her and loved everything about her, especially the things most (weaker) men had taken issue with her entire dating life.

I think this book was the perfect way to wrap up this series and open the door for the next series! Cannot wait to read more books set in this world & see more Clive wreaking havoc on other couples! Thank you to Daphne & the team for the ARC!
