I didn't even finish this book. I think this could have been a really good book IF it was written differently. Maybe a sort of The Hunger Games-esque novel? What I really did not like about it was Daisy's narration, the author's style of writing, and the writing in general. I don't know if its because the Kindle version of this book is messed up, but within the first page of this book I noticed run-on sentences and misplaced grammar and...well...it was horrible. It bugged me so much that I couldn't stand finishing the book. I got about half way through it.
When I was 12 my high school librarian walked up to me looking at Jacqueline Wilson books and handed me this and said You Should Read This and walked off. He probably said more but I don’t really remember. How I Live Now became my favourite book for all of high school, reading it multiple times a year and bringing it up in every English class.
After high school the doom of Underage Cousin Love became a bit too awkward and I put it back on my shelf, unsure of whether I wanted to reread it and tarnish my beautiful memory of it. Well, in a spit of reading YA I picked it up again and read it in a day on the balcony, getting up only for coffee and food. I love this book. The first 14 or so chapters feel like a dream and the war following feels too real. It’s weird, and raw and absorbing and I am SO glad I finally picked it up again.

The book was really enjoyable in retrospect, some parts of it frustrated me and there was this weird thing which was technically incest but I think that it has a very good perspective on the way that war and trauma in general can affect people and it understands the lack of control and the desperation that people feel when they are trying to survive. Also I cannot properly say since I’ve never had an eating disorder but I thought that the way that the writer presented it from a first person perspective was really well handled. I would reread this book
Graphic: Death, Eating disorder, Gun violence, Incest, War
Moderate: Death of parent
Minor: Rape
Reading this book at times like this, is not helping me keep my sanity intact. I wish I had concentrated on Botany more like Piper. For everything that's been happening in ways that are quite similar described in this book of war survival, it kills me to know that how unequipped we are and how damaged we could be. I am pathetically scared.
The book is pretty good. I finished it in a day so it is an easy read. The characters are lovable and relationships are a bit weird but well I am sure anyone who starts reading this book would want to know what the ending is like. It is intriguing and above average kind of a story. I loved it but it also made me think of lots of stressful things.

The first time I read this book, I was twelve. It was in my English teacher's classroom library, and I think she failed to understand the content of the most of the books in said library. Most of the books were twisted like this one, and had deep meanings and serious themes. I spent most of my seventh grade year confused and thinking a lot more psychological than I believe was intended. This book I know for a fact gave me at least one nightmare. Recently I reread this book, and a couple of others that I read when I was twelve, and I liked it. I understood and comprehended a lot more, and thought it super twisted and and kind of magnificent.
