i cannot give it 0 starts bc it wouldn't be fair. I should've known going in that I don't like historical or even magical fiction, but because it was a Hispanic author i wanted to give it a chance. Like many of the reviews mentioned, this was very repetitive and I don't think it translated well. I was quickly bored and could not get into the story. bohoo!
This book is an emotional rollercoaster. I love when an author can successfully cover multiple generations of a family. In this story, my favorite was the seamless transition from the voice of father to son. It offered such a beautiful narrative. The author is so talented and I’m so happy to have stumbled upon this book on Audible. The voice talents on this audiobook are also excellent.
This book is one of the most beautifully written books I’ve read. Sofía Segovia has a way of making you feel every emotion very deeply and immensely. I read the book in Spanish because I wanted to immerse myself more deeply in the history of Mexico. I loved the humor she used throughout her writing even as she’s writing about death and grief during the Spanish flu and other historical times in Mexico. The characters were very well developed and I fell in love with the family. I wept for about half the book because I was so invested in the characters.
While I loved the book after I finished it, I found it very slow and hard to go back to it at times. The plot was slowly developed and there were a few side stories that maybe the book could have done without. I also wish that the rivalry between some of the characters would have been more of a focus. It would have made the story that much more engaging.
All in all, it’s a great story about the love between a family regardless of the obstacles they face.

Like 4.5/5 stars. It’s beautiful and lyrical with that wonderful magical realism arcing throughout. A very strange time to be reading about the “Spanish flu” while we’re in our first global pandemic of the time ...
Beautifully told story. Credit to the translator especially
I didn't make it all the way through, so I guess I'll just give it 4 stars for the first half. I wanted to finish it but the audiobook (while GORGEOUS and so well narrated) was SOOOOOO long and there were many, many tangents. I read this for bookclub and I have trouble reading literature like this but for the most part it was pretty good :) I really felt like I was there through every moment of it. It made me cry and laugh. Sometimes I dislike certain characters, and next I would be loving them.
It took me a long time to read this book, not because it wasn’t good or difficult but more because I was not in the right state of mind. My own distraction took away my dedication but nevertheless I know I hold a treasure of a book in my hands. Beautifully written, I wished I had read it in Spanish, it’s original language and mine, but the translation was excellent. This book tells a story of a pandemic very similar to what’s going on in the world right now, but besides that it is also full of political and social commentary about the Mexican Revolution and it also carries with it the fantasy aspect of magical realism so common and wonderful of the latin american culture. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction, lyric language and magical realism.
Una hermosa dura pero muy hermosa. Te quedas con un sentimiento de nostalgia y los recuerdos se convierten en propios. Imperdible.
