**I received an eARC of this book courtesy of NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing. This has had no bearing on this review.

Going into this book, I knew it was going to be different and strange. (I mean, with a title like Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend how could it not?) And as I read it, I definitely found it to be different and strange, however not necessarily in a good way.

The novel follows Shiels, the Student Body Chair of her high school, a seemingly normal high school until, one day, when a pterodactyl becomes a student. From then on, the school and the student body is influenced and changed by this prehistoric being for better and for worse.

I had quite a few problems with this book. The main one being how the normal and abnormal never completely blended together. The pterodactyl - Pyke - becoming a student was both regarded as unusual and something that has happened elsewhere. However, the reader is never given any information outside of this one instance. Even in Shiels’ life as the “normal” and “abnormal” collided as her life became intrinsically tied to Pyke’s, the worlds were still being treated as two depart entities which distracted from the overarching plot.

I also wasn’t fan of the writing. Most of it was okay, though it did get a bit frantic and jumpy at times as it tried to emulate the tone of the action and Sheils’ thoughts. My biggest issue was with some of the phrases and word choices that Cumyn had Sheils say. Not only did some of her diction seem out of character for her, but for a girl to say or think in general. It seemed very disconnected from reality, sometimes even mores than the fact that there was a pterodactyl walking around.

Overall, Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend was a disappointing read that just couldn’t find the beneficial balance between weird and strange.

Ok so... I don’t have a strong of feelings as everyone else

DNF at 28%.
This book had good reviews when I ordered it for the library. It seemed funny and I thought it would be satirical and maybe a little strange. All I got out of it was the strange. It started out interesting and I kind of liked the writing, but it was all downhill from there. The pterodactyl boy just shows up, people are barely surprised or shocked about it, and nothing was explained in any way. Other than just the weird thought processes of the main character. It started to hurt my brain and I decided it really wasn't worth slogging through anymore. I don't think I've ever given anything a one star AND felt the need to write an actual review. But this one was just... WTF.

I told myself that when I picked up this book no matter what I would give it five stars for the sheer ability the author had to come up with the idea, write 400 pages on the idea, and actually have it published. Bravo.

That being said this was hilarious to read. A great satire on supernatural romance genre with its own spin. It was a really journey for teenage Shiels to truly find out who she is with the help of a pterodactyl. The only thing is the title is misleading because while Shiels is the main character, Pyke is never actually her boyfriend but I suppose her dreaming about I counts.

If you need a book to make you laugh and not take seriously in any way this is the book for you. Just know that it’s based on a true story per the author’s note which now just gets my hopes up that one day I too can find a hot pterodactyl boyfriend.

The title of this book is the best thing about it.

Uhhhh wtf. This book has a crazy premise but is surprisingly deep... as long as you can see past the, you know, the whole pterodactyl thing.

i wanted to love this book. i went into it expecting to love it. but it's really boring, and not really about anything. the pterodactyl is never explained, and Shiels, the main human character, isn't likeable or relatable, so i didn't care about her feelings. This had the potential to be great, but was so terrible i didn't finish it.

dfn 38% (I’m gonna come back and figure out if this is supposed to be satire or not because I can FEEL the potential and idk if it’s actually as good as I think it is)
medium-paced

Yikes. I knew it was going to be bad, but I'm honestly shocked it was this bad. All the characters are not compelling and I have no reason to root for any of them.
