This novel covers the three years that Anne is in charge of a small school in Summerside. She is away from home and she is working while she waits for Gilbert to finish medical school. I actually found the change is narrative, as much of this book is experts from Anne's letters to Gilbert, to be a nice change of pace. It made the three years go by faster I thought. Anne starts out with having issues with the Pringle family, who have set out to make her life miserable because she was not their first choice for the principal job. It's funny how some things never change no matter the location or time period. Anne, of course, in typical Anne fashion wins them over and makes huge drastic changes in several key characters lives. It was fun to see Anne as an adult on her own (well as on her own as women could be in the early 1900's). Aunt Kate, Aunt Chatty, and Rebecca Dew are just a hoot. I adore little Elizabeth, I'm so glad she got her happy ending.

Anne in all eras is a breath of fresh air and the characters she meets always bring a smile.
The worst thing about this book is that it comes right after Anne of the Island, and so it inevitably suffers in comparison. It is, however, not as bad as I remembered it to be, potentially because I read it in English this time. Nonetheless, it's a bit of a non-book, in the sense that nothing significant happens to Anne within those 3 years that radically changes her life. It's a nice little interlude in her story.
It cruelly lacks in Gilbert, though.

A nice break from the rest of the series, this book is mainly told in epistolary narration. It is full of fun stories and adventures with Anne as a school teacher, filled with fun, endearing characters, and the basis for a lot of the second movie in the classic Anne of Green Gables series.
I love the Avonlea series but I did not care for this one at all. There some was some fun anecdotes and familiar storylines because I am a big fan of the tv series with Meghan Follows in Anne of Avonlea but this book was hard to plow through. Wasn't a fan of letter format and all the gushing Anne does is all one sided....do we ever get to hear from Gilbert? Also, didn't feel like the usual Anne adventures. Really struggled to get through this one.
Who doesn't want a cozy fantasy of a loving girl who wears her heart on her sleeve and gets love and endearment in return? Also Anne's letters are just so cute.
