Sense and Sensibility is one of my favourite novels by Jane Austen, and I absolutely liked this manga adaptation. It's amazing how the story is summed up without losing its essence. A lovely and beautifully illustrated version of this remarkable classic. I wonder, what would Jane Austen think of this adaptation? Well, I'm sure she'd love it!

The story is about two sisters, Elinor and Marianne, both represent very contrasting temperaments. On the one hand, Elinor symbolises sense; she is able to keep her feelings under control, even in the hardest times, so as to help others. On the other hand, Marianne symbolises sensibility; she is totally spontaneous. These characteristics are clearly depicted when they fall in love, for example. Although, we can see that through the story, Elinor and Marianne are not entirely sensible and sensitive, respectively. We can see a bit of both in them.

'Manga Classics: Sense and Sensibility' by Jane Austen with adaptation by Stacy King and art by Po Tse is another great addition to the Manga Classics line.

The Dashwood's family fortunes are changed when their father suddenly dies. Sisters Elinor and Marianne live with their mother and are forced to move from their family home. Both find romance, Elinor with Edward Ferrars and Marianne with John Willoughby, but this being Jane Austen, you know there will be bumps along the road to a happy ending.

I have not read the original work (shame on me), but I have seen film adaptations. This adaptation seems very complete, and even covers ground that is not in the films. I've read a couple other adaptations by Stacy King, so I know she is typically very faithful to the original. The art by Po Tse is very much in a manga style. These are great gateway mangas for fans of literature, and great gateways to literature for manga fans. It seems like a win-win to me.

I received a review copy of this manga from UDON Entertainment, Morpheus Studios, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.

I received a free copy through Netgalley, in return for an honest review.

This is a great adaptation, as usual! Although I'm quite fond of Jane Austen's work, I do notice I like the other Manga's better - it is not that easy to bring Austen's wittiness into this form. The adaptation still does justice to her work though, and I feel for the characters just as much as when I read the original book! I did miss Thomas Palmer (Mrs. Jennings' son-in-law) though. I loved Hugh Laurie's role in the miniseries by the way.

Anyway, if you like Manga's, I think this is a must-read again!

Udon’s Manga Classics line continues to put out the most popular literary classics in manga format, no doubt to the relief to high school and college students everywhere. This time out, I read Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. When sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood’s father dies, their family is forced by family finances and turmoil to move to a cottage in Devonshire. Elinor has high hopes for her former romantic interest, Edward, while Marianne falls for John Willoughby – who seems to be hiding something. Colonel Brandon, an older man, also shows interest in Marianne, but she’s initially afraid that he’s too old for her. Similar to Pride and Prejudice, we have romantic entanglements and complicated relationships. Manga fans who also want some reinforcement of the Austen classic will appreciate this more visual layout of all the relationships in this story. Great for middle, high school, and college students.

This was a really great adaptation of the original book. It was fun to read it as a manga version, and actually easier than reading the original. Sometimes the classics get really long-winded and somewhat boring in places but getting to "see" the scenes instead of just reading about them made this version an absolute pleasure to read. The illustration is really great as well.
