I had a really good time reading this. Plot moved apace and it was just a fun experience all round.
However, it did feel like the characters were just a bit too similar to Artemis Fowl. Particularly Miles and Lazuli who were dead ringers for Artemis and Holly (Dead. Ringers.) but Beckett too sort of took the place of Butler and Whistle Blower, Mulch’s. I do wonder why Eoin chose another female fairy so similar to Holly. He’s usually pretty good about representation so I can understand not wanting to have a fully male team from that perspective, but it did feel quite a lot like a carbon copy. Hopefully her personality will develop more as the series continues and will flesh out into someone that is not… almost exactly the same. (I mean, as a long time fan it did feel comfortingly familiar but I also wonder… why bother with new names if you’re going to be writing the same characters?) Also the conclusion was slightly Deus Ex Machina. Not so much that it took away satisfaction, but a little bit.
However, like I said I did have a really enjoyable time reading it. Nostalgia definitely helped, but it was also felt well-paced and I do just generally love Colfer ZaninessTM and this book was chock-a-block full of it. The twin dynamic was great too, and I’m looking forward to seeing that developed.
All in all, great fun.

(also I can’t wait for the book that will hopefully occur at some point later in the series when the characters are better established and Eoin Colfer decides it is time for one of the greatest mashups of all time and we see a Artemis & Holly vs Myles & Lazuli situation and It. Will. Be. Incredible. )

i forgot what these books were like. in a word: bad

the writing style...... when you're 15 you have different standards

hot takes under a spoiler cut so this review can look short and i can pretend i had no other thoughts on it

Spoileri have not recently and WILL not reread any of the other books but the one thing i remember liking from rereading the original in like 2009(ISH) was that while artemis himself is truly insufferable it's clear that he's a little child with no parents aside trying desperately to act more grown up to mask how sad and lonely he is (which is why at the end he makes the deal with holly heal his mom) and i wish we got more of that with myles. i mean he has a family who loves him and seems to be active in his life but but he's literally an 11 year old child who is putting all this pressure on himself for no reason. he's a baby! he gets shot point blank with a shotgun!! little guy should go to therapy

despite this myles is even more insufferable than anyone else in his family and i kind of hate him. sorry buddy

do you think artemis ever sits in his horrible backyard homemade mars rocket and goes "i think i have accidentally turned my baby brother into the worst most insufferable version of himself" and butler goes "uh yeah obviously, why did you only realize this now" and artemis goes "he maxed out all my credit cards buying ubers and 500 replacement suits"

i hope holly gets a bunch of long relaxing vacations where she can drink magic beer and just chill for a while. turn her phone on silent. wear her mirror sunglasses and watch the sunset

i haven't mentioned him but beckett is a manic pixie dream boy without the pixie or love interest. that's all there is to say on the matter

just realized this is only the second artemis fowl without pages and pages and PAGES of fart and shit jokes. can't wait for the sequel where it's revealed that mulch diggums is beckett's godfather

I should preface this, as I'm a bit biased. Anyone who knows me knows that Artemis Fowl was my favorite series growing up. I think that probably made lean in favor of liking this first book in the sequel series. Whether that's true or not, Fowl Twins reminded me just why I love the Artemis Fowl world. Colfer's writing can only be described as a delight, and his adventures are always a wild ride from start to finish. Just the way I like it. So did I get emotional every time big brother Artemis was mentioned? Sure. Did I feel super stressed out every time the twins did anything (mom friend alert!)? For sure. Now let's everyone pretend I'm not super emotional after reading this sequel. Don't look at me.

A nun, a duke, a pixel and a pair of twins walk into a black ops site....
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When a 150-year-old duke tries to bring down a toy troll on the Fowl's compound on Dalkey island, three things happen: Beckett Fowl makes a new friend, Specialist Lazuli Heitz of LEPrecon is plunged into a troll rescue mission, and a commando nun on the hunt for fairies begins a kidnapping that will lead to the (temporary) death of one Fowl and a caper across Europe involving an anarchitecture, a train ride, and more Regrettable incidents than you can live stream.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
@eoincolfer brings his trademark humour, dramatic narrative flair, and a plot so ridiculously convoluted that I couldn't help but laugh and enjoy. Myles is Artemis 2.0 while Beckett brings a glee unmatched by even Mulch Diggums. Rollicking fun, with enough smarty-pantsing, smarty-fisting and outrageous criminal-mastetminding to make you laugh with delight even as you sit on the edge of your seat. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love the little callbacks to the original series, yet how much more world-building and imagination we get in this novel. I can't wait for the next book to see what's next for Myles, Beckett, Lazuli, Whistle Blower and NANNI. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Satisfied a long pent-up craving for more Artemis adventures. Artemis is not in the scene of the action but his presence lurks all the same. The Fowl twins, Myles and Beck, are welcome additions to the Fowl-Fairy universe. This should be the first in a series of adventures for the Fowl twins. I can't wait.

The text flows as Eoin Colfer packs together an entertaining YA book. Colfer has subtly changed the tone of the narration to have a little more levity. (Maybe it's the effect of writing the latest volume to the Hitchhiker's series.) It doesn't overshadow the best Artemis Fowl books but those are high standards to match so I won't complain.

Myles is not quite Artemis and Beck definitely isn't anything like Artemis.

Then again, no one is exactly like Artemis Fowl.
