This book is a retelling of Ovid's classic work by Heinz Janisch. It is categorized as children's fiction but I would not agree with that. I have to admit I was a bit concerned when I looked a bit closer at the cover and noticed that the woman was naked. I teach grade 3 and even though she is covered, I would never hear the end of this from my students if they saw this book in our classroom library. That wasn't the only semi-naked photo, nipples are prominent throughout the story, with one as early as page 11. But maybe you're thinking, well that's fine we can get past nipples. Maybe your little friends are not as immature as mine. I still would not classify this book as children's fiction. The text is in a relatively small font and the words are quite challenging. Giving an example from one page words include: infatuated, concern, approach, exhausted, despair, pursuer, transform, laurel, nymph, kneeling, honor, noble, deeds, glory, tremble, approval. These words would be challenging for most students in my class. If I had to give this an age rating (artistic nudity aside) I would probably say grade 6+. The images do not do enough to support struggling or younger readers and while some of the stories may be familiar to the reader, for example, Midas's touch, they are unlikely to come into this book with the prerequisite knowledge needed to comprehend this book. I admire the author for his interest in bringing these classic stories to children, but I do not think this book accomplished that goal, unfortunately. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

I had to read Book III and Book IX for a College class and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. The only fault I can find is that the transition between stories in a same chapter were very confusing.
I hope, in the future, to be able to read the whole book!

This book really drove home how many of the Greek myths involve sexual assault... and to add insult to injury, it's always those who are raped who are punished for it, instead of the rapists. Not much has changed since then.
While it is beautifully written, The Metamorphoses is also very repetitive and honestly kind of a drag. Clearly Ovid mastered form, but not content. 2.5/5⭐

Alternate titles: Juno is Angry, or How I Was Changed into a Bird (or Possibly a Tree). :) On the one hand, I enjoyed many of these tales of change and metamorphosis. Ovid’s language can be quite vivid, and many of the stories present startling imagery that lingers in the memory. Also, many of the ‘wronged women’ soliloquies had an emotional nuance and depth that felt almost modern as they debated love vs honor. On the other hand, the stories can be horribly repetitive (god is angered, changes person into something else, wash, rinse, repeat) and the themes of rape, jealousy, and war are hard for modern readers to stomach. Also, though my edition had copious footnotes, so many of the references were obscure that the footnotes could have been footnoted and it wouldn’t have been amiss. ;) This is not the fault of the text, of course, but is a stumbling block for a modern reader.
I’m glad I read this, even if I did find it a bit boring at times. The poems that I liked, and there were many, made some of the less palatable aspects ok. But this is not a read for everyone.
