Adelaida loses her mother and then her home and possessions, as well as whatever sense of safety she has left. The uncertainty of her future and the way she can't go to anyone else for help, as the authorities themselves are the problem leads to a very claustrophic book as she mostly stays in one spot, reflecting on her relationship with her mother and her country at the same time. I found the historical setting very well done, as Adelaida is just trying to live her life and yet is stymied at every turn.

But the actual book I found quite slow-paced. It was definitely more of a reflective kind of book but when it came down to it, I wasn't too invested in the decision that Adelaida made and whether it would succeed. But I did find it a good audiobook and I am interested in reading more books that focus on Venezuelan history.

Felt like a chore to get through this. Bleak story, weak plot. And the way the women who stole her flat were described, especially their bodies and skin colour, just felt like such a caricature. I’ve read a few reviews in Spanish that criticised the portrayal of these women and the situation in general as classist and racist. I don’t know much about Venezuela, so I can’t comment, but it felt a bit icky to me too. Also, as others have remarked, there was no mention of US sanctions and the cause of the disaster was depicted as completely black and white. Of course, we see things through the eyes of the MC and she can be as biased as needed. She’s just also not a very strong character to carry the whole story.

Where is the story? Narrator buries her mother. And? Prose is inflated and self-interested, like she doesn’t care if a reader is there or not.
