This is my mother's book and when I went back home for the summer, I decided to read it. It was one of the best books I have read in my life. I found that it was hard to put this book down. Maybe because the setting of this book is very familiar to me because it's Kerala and this is book about Keralites. She wrote it in such a beautiful way. You can feel the tropical vibe through her words and her style of writing.
She also wrote it in a way that the timeline of this book is very unique in a way (I think). She sort of tells you whats gonna happen but at the same time it's still a mystery. And she goes from past to future to middle back to past and then somewhere else and so on.
Ultimately this book is a very depressing and heartbreaking story. I don't know if I would be able to read it again. One of the mysteries of this book is the meaning of the title. What does it mean. And you only find out towards the end.
I absolutely loved this book and I don't think I'll be able to forget this story.

Loved, loved this novel. I stumbled through the first few chapters, but then grew into the narrative rhythms and stylistic signatures. Roy's narrative pattern was very satisfying--the book almost spiraled itself inward is how I would describe it. One of the best treatments of the point of view of children and the working of a child's mind I've read. As a writer, I learned a lot from Roy in this novel: the compound words, the echoing descriptions, thematic organizing linkages, using the curves of the narrative spiral to generate tension/conflict, and the importance of naming things. I haven't read any Rushdie, and read elsewhere that Roy's novel bears a strong resemblance to Rushdie's postmodern stylistic signatures, even if true (which is unlikely that Roy wrote her novel without prior exposure to what Rushdie was doing), Roy's work stands on its own. I will definitely be rereading this one a couple times!
