Couldn’t recommend this book enough for anyone who struggles with anxiety and/or panic attacks. Barry puts it plain and simple and explains in a way that’s easy for any reader to understand. Can’t wait to start implementing these strategies in my life!

I hate it when I don't immediately review books. I'm so forgetful, and it doesn't help that I haven't been highlighting anything in my books. I'm at least going to have to start that, and taking notes as I read.

My biggest remaining impression of this book is that it could have been 50 pages long. The author makes his case that you have to accept anxiety, invite it in, and only when you fully give into it will you be able to control it (although it will still always be there; it just won't impact you as much).

It makes sense. I know I work myself up and enter an anxiety loop with how I'm feeling, but I can't say this book was very helpful. Mainly, it might be because I've discovered my issue isn't panic attacks; it's an actual heart stopping (I mean that literally) issue.

So, a decent premise, but way too long a book. The ridiculous, pointless graphs included and tables that repeated the same information over and over seemed to be there just to make the book longer. But maybe the repetition helps some people? The graphs seriously were pointless.

3.5/5. I have really mixed feelings about this.

first, the method he offers is definitely simplistic enough to be understood and practiced, and I have found some relief from trying it in the midst of a darker moment. on the other hand....

I really didn't appreciate the way he referred to other treatments, medication, CBT, or otherwise. he says in the beginning his may not work for everyone and might not work immediately, and then basically swears off of all other forms of relief. I definitely think this could make a difference, but not completely cutting out other options.

i also found the self love chapter a bit odd. i really can't find that saying i love myself every day makes me believe it - i think there's definitely more to it.

that being said, i liked the conversational tone of the book, and the hope was refreshing - as was the insistence upon normalcy of anxiety. normalizing mental health is something that's very important to me, and that i appreciated.

definitely worth some time, though some portions can be taken with a grain of salt

i didn’t expect this to help, really. whenever my mum gives me stuff to read it’s like “take deep breaths and your anxiety will go away” or “go for a nice walk” and it’s never actually helpful, but this really was. it made total sense, was clearly laid out, and had concrete ways to take action to work with anxiety. i found myself resistant to some things (like cutting ice cream out of my diet - no thank you), but i know that this is the right path to go on for recovery. it was also really moving??? anyway. a good read. i would definitely recommend it.

The Review

Okay. I suffer from panic attacks. They are related to my Ulcerative Colitis and they are horrible. Whilst I await my CBT appointments, I decided to read some books about anxiety. Hence Dare.

There were good points and bad points about this book. Firstly, the bad things. The whole premise of how to get rid of your anxiety is to pretend it is something humorous and silly and then to tell it that it doesn’t bother you. Erm…anyone else thinking this method sounds a little too similar to the JK Rowling spell to get rid of boggarts? Yep, me too. Ridikulas.

However, I did try one trick when I felt a panic attack creeping up. One way was to sing because it releases tension. I am so sorry for the people on the way home to work who had to hear me butchering Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” but it did keep my panic attack at bay.

I’m not sure if everything in Dare will work for me but I did take one thing from it so for that I am grateful.

The advice to run toward the anxiety wasn't exactly revolutionary, but the way the information was presented did feel more easy to digest and something I can actually utilize.
