Yet another Ethan and Jack that completely stole my heart.

Jack Reardon has been undercover for the past fifteen months when his cover is blown wide open and he finds himself in a torture shack only to be rescued by the same man who ruined his cover, notorious international assassin Ethan Blade.

Alternating between two timelines, we witness how in the past, Jack and Ethan met and struggled to survive in the harsh desert together and in the present, Jack facing the consequences of withholding the truth, when Ethan appears at Jack’s off the record work building only willing to speak to him. It served the Blacklist pilot episode with Reddington and I ate it up.

There is barely any romance in this book, it mainly focuses on the ‘unveiling the imposter’ plot but the push and pull between the two characters was to die for. Also I know Ethan is a cold, ruthless, meticulous assassin but he’s so adorable sometimes. He’s my little meow meow.

4 action-packed stars

A very fun read, that was initially held back by its then/now structure, but finally converged into a satisfying pace.

Told in 3rd person from Jack's perspective, the chapters are short and each alternates between now and then. I typically do like to have a chapter up front with the now and then a full flashback session for half the book, because I like knowing how things are going to end up. In this case though I found there was too much switching around.

The intro was interesting, but the story lagged around 20/30% where I didn't have enough information or connection with the characters either in the then or the now. Around 4o% though the storylines start to converge nicely, and then really build into the mad rush of the last 15-20%. It's very much the structure of an action-movie, where rather than having one big romantic conflict around 80%, here the entire last section is just rammed solid with action.

Speaking of which, though you get a good sense of where it's going, the romance is pretty sparing. I did believe that they have a deep, almost inexplicable connection, and the sex scenes are realistic and well-written which does leave you wanting more on the emotional front. I know that will come in later books though and is a purposeful choice.

I live in Sydney and enjoyed being able to situate myself with the location references. I liked the desert scenery and the touches with Sheila the camel, they really are the biggest dickheads (right up there with alpacas, geese and goats). The scenes with the animals served really well to humanise Ethan, who was very much an automaton.

This is not overall a super believable story, but it's such a romp that I didn't struggle to suspend my disbelief and I can't wait to read more.

4.5⭐️ This was great. Very suspenseful, exciting, and well-written, intricate plot. I liked how the author wove the two timelines together. The romance was subtle as Jack and Ethan can’t decide if they trust one another yet but the physical attraction between them was undeniable and hot. I love a good cold-blooded killer with a sad backstory and a deep vulnerability that you just want to wrap them in a blanket burrito.

Overall, a great book if you like spy novels and thrillers. Very similar to the political Tal Bauer books.

I'm unsure how to rate this book!

3 wouldn't do it justice but 4 neither. I guess 3.5 stars.

I didn't read this book in one go, it was interesting but I'm not the biggest fan of how the author wrote this book. However, I did like Blade because of it. She made me like him because of the present tense, because if I knew him only because of his past with Jake, I truly wouldn't cheer for these two to be together.
I do like that Blade is morally grey, but I do hate betrayals.
