this trope is kinda funny. i love the dedication to her interests

A little dated by when it came out in both art style and writing but charming all the same. Though after getting through volume 1 I can pretty much see how the story is going to go and it looks like my ship isn’t the endgame, which is hurting my desire to continue. I’ve struggled through that issue before in series like Ouran High School Host Club but this one isn’t quite as good from the jump so I don’t know if I’ll prioritize continuing the story.

This manga was one of my favourite lighthearted and comedic read during my teens. Re-reading it is very nostalgic. All the tropes are very old, the style of drawing is typical from the 90s-00s and some clichés can be problematic. But overall it's a fun reread for a nostalgic being like me.

Loved this series. I love reverse harem type series especially when the girl is considered to be 'plain.' Nakahara was a hilarious character and I loved all of her creepy ways.

It was similar in my mind to Boys Over Flowers. Same general concept and characters.

I've never been a big anime fan but I enjoyed this manga very much. I can relate to Sunako's character.

some aspects of this was funny but most of the jokes were in pretty bad taste and were just uncomfortable. also the art just wasn’t attractive to me so haha

The Wallflower is, above all, an examination of beauty. It's also a really fun read with a good love story thrown in just for kicks.

Early in her high school career Sunako Nakahara was told by a jerk she had a crush on that she was ugly. After thinking about it a bit, she decided to reject everything beautiful and accept herself as dark and unattractive. She revels in the weird, grotesque and frightening.

Unfortunately for Sunako, her loving aunt has decided she'll become a lady no matter what. Her current plan is to invite four gorgeous guys to live at her house rent free. They don't have to pay a yen...unless they fail to turn Sunako into a beautiful lady.

This volume introduces the characters and sets up just how desperate the guys are in their quest. Each of the guys are distinct with their own personalities and feelings and each of them has a different approach to making Sunako beautiful. Of the four, one of them, Kyohei, turns out to not only be the hottest among them (to the point where people are willing to kidnap him) but also the one who understands Sunako best. Their dialogue is fun and the friendship she slowly builds with guys she can barely stand being around is beautiful.

One of the best things about this manga is the focus on inner beauty. In this volume the Inner Beauty Focus is on appreciation and making friends/being willing to come out of your shell. I know that sounds all cheesy and everything, but it's very well done and not in the slightest bit simplistic.

Plus, the comedy in this is great, especially for those with a darker sense of humor. And yet, never at any point does the story in this volume become depressing. A fantastic read.

It was ok, may or may not continue. I dig the main chick.

Quirky and mildly insane… just how I like it hehehe. On a more serious note, it’s such a product of its time (which makes it… interesting!) and the author adlibs are all really fun and personal. I love looking up all the (now) obscure references and getting greater insight into what’s happening, and the edition I’m reading comes with a context guide for different scenes and an honorifics dictionary (very cool and not common in Manga).
Author seems like she writes to her whim which is the best way sometimes. Will keep you updated 🫶

I recently bought all 36 volumes of this manga at Boston Anime, so I'll be working my way through this series! I've been watching the anime and am almost finished with that, but I'm sure the manga goes way past that, so I'm really excited. This first volume introduces Sunako and the other main characters. If you've seen the anime, it's pretty close to that, but more serious. The anime is seriously crazy at times, so I kind of appreciated the more serious feel to this. (Don't get me wrong, things are still pretty crazy. It just feels a bit less so.) I will say, the adjustment to the art style is pretty rough, but it's growing on me. I feel like the manga also has a bit more of a romance feel than the anime, even so early on, which is nice. I actually ship Kyohei and Sunako pretty hard. I'm really excited to make some progress on this!
