The protagonist is really poorly written - every other thought is interjected with how privileged she is, and there are a million revelations that it takes her forever to get. It's also annoying to hear her prejudice over and over - not that you can't have a protagonist who is flawed, but "magic is evil and that's what I was told" is slammed into the reader over and over.
The world-building is confusing, as the magic is pretty vague and there are also modern technologies like cars referenced. I'm also glad that someone mentioned the Monty Python reference that was made like three different times, because it was super jarring.

Wonderful, but predictable. I do, however, have a feeling that the second book is going to be five stars!

This was really good and I had lots of fun reading it. Can’t wait to see what happens moving forward for these characters.
I enjoyed the story but the FMC got on my nerves! She did show growth by the end of the story and I liked how the author really intertwined all the characters together! Some good twists and turns that didn’t see coming so it kept in engaged! I will probably continue with the story!
2.5 stars
This was…ok. I found the tone very young and wasn’t a fan of either MC. I ended up skimming through a lot of the chapters, but was more intrigued by the last 1/4 of the book. It got my attention enough that I’d be curious to see where the story goes in the sequel.

Josslyn Drake is a pampered socialite who becomes infected with magic, which is essentially a death sentence under the empire. She teams up with Jericho Nox, a dangerous criminal, in the hopes of ridding herself of the magic and returning to her comfortable life, but as Josslyn learns more about her partner in crime, magic and the empire, she begins to question everything she thought she knew. Echoes and Empires does rely on popular fantasy tropes, but as a big fan of a morally grey love interest, I didn't really mind. I would have appreciated a bit more world building, but it was an entertaining read nonetheless.

Thieves and forbidden magic? I thought this book was my dream come true! The reality is I got stuck reading from the pov of a very unlikeable main character. Shame. The magic system wasn’t explained and the world building… what a mess. An example of how a great sounding plot can be horrendously executed. There was just so much unnecessary dialogue that didn’t add anything to the story whatsoever. And banter, if you can call it that, was hella cringe
