It was okay. Not great. Not bad. Just okay. The characters had the potential to be great but there was something that was lacking. I wish there was more back story about Nicholas or why magic was banned but it kind of just skimmed over it and expected you to go along with it. The writing was okay but that's about it. It just seemed like it was lacking in something.
Was war das denn? Es hat stark angefangen und wurde bald langweilig. Ich habe teilweise ganze Passagen geskippt um mal zu den interessanten Teilen zu kommen (von denen es nicht sehr viele gab).
Gute Idee, schwache Umsetzung. Lesbar, aber... nu ja. Es muss echt nicht sein. Man verpasst nüscht.

This was really good, though I wouldn't have minded another 100 pages or so to really dig into the magic of this world and to cement Elizabeth's total shift in worldview. It felt a little rushed and like Elizabeth immediately flipped from an ideology she grew up believing into fully supporting the other side, and it could have used a little more emotion and tension. The same with . Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the second half of the story.
Spoiler
John having almost no issues with the woman he fell in love with being a witchhunter. Considering his past, that was hard to believe.
This is pretty good.
It's not perfect, it dragged a little in parts, I almost walked away more than once. But I managed to push through it and it ended up as a good book.

Allemaal dingen klopten niet en het was raar en de enige man die ik leuk vond zat niet eens in de love triangle. Dan heb ik het ook vrij snel gehad met een boek 😂

I read the novella The Healer prior to reading this book, and it has its pros and cons. In The Healer, you see the beginning of the book from John's perspective up until Elizabeth wakes up in the beginning of the book. I think I liked the insight into John's mind it gave it, but it might have been better to read it after finishing The With Hunter.
" How did you do it? You weren't strong, not like Marcus. You weren't ambitious like Caleb. Not vicious like Linus. How did you survive?"
"Because I was afraid to do anything except live."
I rate this book 5 stars because I just really enjoyed it. It is about change and what lengths someone would go to to make it happen. It is about love, and how it can overcome grief. But most importantly, it is just a story about a girl who's world and everything she has believed in gets turned upside down. Enemies become friends, and friends become enemies. Those believed in turn out to be liars and those thought to be liars and evil, turn out to be good.
The character development was also interesting. I liked that even minor characters were able to change and learn.
I have two issues with the book. One, it was frustrating to follow the prophecy that had to do with Elizabeth, and I don't really think it is over, I might have to check it again. And Two, for all the talk about Malcolm, The King, he never once gets an appearance. I would like that to change.

This was one of my most anticipated releases of 2015, and I pretty much spent the first half of the year eagerly awaiting June so I could get my hands on this book. Unfortunately, I didn't love this book as much as I thought I would - it had so much potential! Witches! Black magic! Political intrigue! Cute healer boy! - but there were a few things that didn't really work for me. Nevertheless, things really picked up in the second half of the book.
Witch Hunter wasn't what I expected in that it was very... light? Given the plot synopsis, I was expecting something quite heavy and dark, but what I was given was a light-hearted adventure with a few fun characters, a light, sweet romance and a dash of humour. I'm not complaining, really - it was a fun ride of a read, but it also had a lot of unused potential. I expected a more complicated plot, a book that was darker in tone.
Elizabeth and I... we didn't get along. I found Elizabeth to be incredibly naive and it was incredibly difficult for me to sympathise with her. She rarely thought for herself - her job is capturing witches and wizards and letting them burn at the stake. It's a brutal way to die, and she never questions whether or not these people are truly guilty. She never questions why Blackwell won't let her kill the witches and wizards - if magic is truly bad, why let them live? Even after she is rescued from prison by Anglia's most wanted wizard, her only thought is returning to the people who imprisoned her and handing over innocent people to them. It was incredibly frustrating to read Elizabeth's bigotry.
Fortunately she is backed by an amazing supporting cast - the swoon-worthy John, who is a gentle and patient healer (and also the main love interest), was a standout. Another favourite was Fifer, who was brash and fierce and unapologetic. It was odd, having a character so full of personality next to one who lacked any discernible personality whatsoever, but Elizabeth was actually at her best when she was with the supporting cast and not left to any internal reflections. Fifer's sort-of love interest Shuyler was also amusing, and had some wonderful scenes with Elizabeth. While these characters all worked well as a group and each brought something different to the table, I don't think that they were developed enough for me to fully appreciate them as individuals. I could sense where Boecker was going with characterisation, and there were some traits that I wanted to be fleshed out a little more because they weren't quite there. That said, Boecker is a talented writer - she really draws you into the action scenes, which are cinematic and near flawless.
Though Witch Hunter didn't live up to my expectations, I'll definitely be keeping the next book on my radar. The second half was quite enjoyable, and the big reveal at the end made me keen to find out what happens!

The beginning was a little shaky but by the second half of the book Boecker really found her stride. Overall great story. Look forward to reading a sequel.
