This was cool. Hellboy is always cool. I have to say, there are a lot of instances in this series as a whole I'm not toooootally sure what's happening and what world what creatures come from. To have them all in Hell, and a part of that world somehow, was rad. This interpretation of Hell rivals any others.

Holy crap! This is awesome!

Magnífico. El dibujo de este hombre siempre me provoca escalofríos. A ver si consigo el resto...

Mignola is back in the driving seat as Big Red plummets south. Taken on a Dickensian journey around Pandemonium, Hellboy is shown both where he's come from and his destiny - trouble is he wants none of it.
The art, as always, is outstanding, with the red flourishes really standing out. Mignola's sketches at the end are an added bonus.

More Hellboy goodness at a surprisingly intimate scale given the location. Mike Mignola's art is unparalleled.

I'm reading the Hellboy Universe books in their chronological order in universe and I gotta say, it's always such a treat to come back to Hellboy.
This volume is excellent. It feels like an early Hellboy adventure, but in Hell and that's a lot of fun to me.
We are introduced to some of Hellboys family, they're as dysfunctional as you would expect. The status quo has also been shaken. Big things are happening in Hell, what will the Boy do?

I really like the push Mignola has in Hell that everyone bears the "chain they forged in life" and that yeah, you can do whatever you want, but you are gonna pay for that.
Also the nods to a Christmas Carol and Hamlet, are weirdly fitting and kind of great.

It's so freaking awesome to have a Hellboy story that's both written and drawn by Mignola again! Highly recommend this story! It's like Dickens "A Christmas Carol" told in Hellboy fashion. Just go read it!

If anyone could pull off continuing their story after dying and going to Hell... And not only that, but making for an even crazier story than when it was alive? It would be Hellboy.

1: The Descent

Hellboy-in-Hell-1-1a-He-Ended-Well

You know, 'he ended well' isn't a terrible way to go. It's like Dresden: 'he died doing the right thing.'

Also... it's totally A Christmas Carol, Ghosts of whichever and all. That was unexpected.

Also also: the art of this whole series but this volume in particular is just wonderful:

2: Pandemonium

So now we're getting into the meat of the story.

Hellboy-in-Hell-1-2a-They-all-hid

Hellboy goes to Hell... And the powers run from him. That says a lot about this story.

A bit of philosophy too:

Hellboy-in-Hell-1-2b-Each-soul-chooses

3: Family Ties

And not only the philosophy of death, but also family. You don't choose who you're born too, which is especially important when your father is literally a demon.

4: Death Riding an Elephant

Hellboy-in-Hell-1-4a-He-cursed-me-that-I-should-live-forever

Not the first time I've heard of that curse, but it's still interesting. Also the world building of drawing water from the river Lethe:

Hellboy-in-Hell-1-4b-Lethe

No mention, but it's cool worldbuilding.

5: The Three Gold Whips

Man I need to read the next one of these...

Good on it's own but holy cats, I need to catch up on my Hellboy lore! I always forget what an awesome storyteller Mignola is, and I adore his art.
