Great Expectations

Charles Dickens

3.54 AVERAGE

Great Expectations is the story of Pip. How he comes of age, how he sees the world and how when growing up his views are constructed out of nuanced experience instead of in black and white.
It's another work with the crazy Dickensian characters, many of them so much larger than life. While they are certainly entertaining in their own way, I find it difficult to relate to some situations as real and captivating when all is so very surreal. This jerk from lacking normal people together with the over usage of chance-luck-coincidence as a driving force of this story pulls it down to a still high four star level.
I enjoyed in particular any scene that held both Estella and Miss Havisham, as the two had their own energy and strengths in such different and complementary ways for the scenes in question.
Not as rewarding to read as David Copperfield but definitely entertaining.

I read the full version edition and i think Part one was so great and i started to agree that this is one of the greatest work of Dickens. The prisoner really scared me like lil Pip. And i didnt blame Pip for being scared of him even till he grew up. But the 2nd part was so-so. To be honest i didnt really like it, since it was slow, monotone, and boring. I didnt like how Pip changed, tho i do believe some people in his position would do the same. Thats what we called new-rich syndrome. And the last part was so amazing. It made me happy, mad, and sad over and over again. But i wish the ending would be happier, tho (again) it was so realistic!

My favorite character is Joe! He was so loyal and would always be there in Pip' ups and downs (mostly downs). He was the best bestfriend everyone could have and he deserved the best for him too!
My second favorite is the prisoner. He scared me at first, but when i heard his story it moved me and i realized how a little thing we said or gave to someone would affect them. I loved how he worked hard and sacrificed himself, it was beyond imagination.
My least favorite aka the worst character, and everyone must agree, is Pumblechook! No need to tell how wicked he was, you already knew.

Another not so satisfying ending to an otherwise great novel.
His sister dying was genuinely pretty sad and unexpected.

pip my beloved

pip is a simp

Dickens reminds me of Tolkein in that the details are what makes his writing beautiful but I just wish a bit more had actually happened in this book. Pip spends 90% of the entire thing being the most pathetic, whiny and brick-headed main character I have ever seen and the new ending is a complete travesty to literature. However it's clearly a spectacular piece of work and I didn't have it in my heart to give it less than 4 stars considering the point of the story is that the main character is a massive piece of garbage so I can't really fault him for that
medium-paced
