This sequel to "The House in the Cerulean Sea" is a fantastic novel expanding on the lives of the characters introduced in the first book.   While the novel falls in the magical realism genre it does a fantastic job of including situations people experience in today's society.     The author does a fantastic job of blending humor as well as including situations one can identify in one's own life especially if you're part of a marginalized community.  It will make you chuckle and smile with the antics of these magical children.   You will also feel sad as you learn how people's prejudices and fear can lead to traumatizing children and adults being justified as being for the "better good" for the "normal" part of society.  Realistically portraying how people will often make assumptions about another being a threat or evil without knowing them at all but judging them simply because they're different .

I found myself contemplating the different meanings and types of fear from the type that ends up causing harm and that which doesn't.  Most of all that the only way to combat bigotry and prejudice is that people NEED to interact with people that are different; otherwise, they will readily believe anything told to them even if it's a bunch of lies.  Overall it's a story of a much maligned, neglected, and abused community and their allies form a type of community and support each other even during the most difficult of times.  A community that becomes a family and beacon for those who are oppressed.

So I highly recommend reading the first book, if you haven't already, and enjoy the continuation of the story of Linus and Arthur as they continue to run a home for magical children deemed dangerous or too unworldly to be among humans.

I read House in the Cerulean Sea and loved it. So naturally, Somewhere Beyond the Sea was on my TBR. I really enjoyed this book. I've seen mixed reactions to the book, where some love it and others enjoyed the first one more and didnt care so much for this one. While I love both of the books and thoroughly enjoy TJ Klune and his writing style, I think the last 1/4 of the book was the best in this one. Cerulean was by far my favorite of the two, but this isn't one to pass up! Expect a slower pace, and a much more tense atmosphere in this book.
