The story itself was very intriguing, which really kept me reading. The characters were sometimes painful and cringy to read about, but that's kind of how high school is. However, the writing style took A LOT to get used to. I found myself having to reread paragraphs (sometimes pages) to figure out how we got from point A to point B only to find out it was another tangential memory she took us on.

*3.5/5 stars*

Sooo many trigger warnings! Definitely check them before going into this.

I have mixed feelings on this. I enjoyed it enough to read it pretty quickly, and it held my attention. But I just didn’t really care for Ani much. She was a lot, and not in a good way. I get why, absolutely after all she’s gone through, but still idk.
The topics were intense. And so sad. I read this mostly because I wanted to watch the new movie, and I still definitely will! This one just won’t be on my top favorites.

First I will say that I didn't know much about this book prior to reading it. I didn't see any of the promotional push, therefore had no real expectations going into it. Overall I liked the book; 3 stars. I thought the story unfolded nicely, a little predictable but otherwise I thought it flowed nicely and the reveals were well timed. The one thing I didn't like was that the protagonist's story arc, it didn't ring true to me. I understand how her past led to the life and the choices she made as an adult. Even as you see her past rear it's head into her current life as the book went on, I thought she stayed "authentic" to who she was. But as the book wrapped up, her personality (apart from the thing that related to her past) didn't seem true to the character, it all seemed to change to quickly and neatly for me.

3.5 stars due to a weak ending and plot holes.

DID NOT FINISH: 32%

DNF at 32% I just was not reaching for it and I wasn’t really invested/interested in the story or characters

Ani has spent the last 15 years building herself up to become someone impressive — the job, the highlights, the massive ring on her finger, everything is going according to plan. Against her fiancé’s advice, she agreed to be a part of a documentary for her high school and now tendrils from her past threaten to topple the future she has so painstakingly built. Told in two time periods — the current day and when she was in high school, we see how Ani’s past continues to haunt her in the future. I got the sense that she was an unreliable narrator, and despite the cold exterior she portrays, it was hard to not feel for her as we learned about the trauma she faced growing up. The twists were SHARP, I thought I had things figured out and then the next page would bring another layer to the story. I would have liked to see some of the plots be explored a bit more, but the pace was pleasurable for a quick read.

I really had a hard time connecting to the main character and felt like the full story of the "incident" came way too late in the book.

This is a wannabe Gillian Flynn novel. It comes up a little short but still very very good. I listened to it on audible and was drawn to it whenever I had a few minutes, which hasn't happened in a long time.

2.5 rounded up. This book needs to come with trigger warnings. A really challenging read for a lot of reasons. You can really feel the author's pain despite its flaws.
