Quite a disappointing main character and full of superfluous language. There was nothing dramatically unique about the plot and it dragged a bit in spots. Despite all that, it was interesting enough to keep me reading.

I really enjoyed this magical novel, I actually enjoyed Quentin's character, although he was selfish and depressed
Spoiler the lost of Alice was sad and shocking <\spoiler>

I already have The Magician King from the library on loan and will starting soon.

While the story is enticing, it’s writing falls flat. Could’ve used more time and better editing. Could’ve become something like Name of the Wind

The story was okay even if it was derivative - one half Harry Potter for teenagers, one half Narnia for atheists - if it wasn't for one thing.

That one thing is Quentin bloody Coldwater, the the biggest twat I've encountered in a book in many a long year. He's a jammy bugger as we say in my part of the world, someone who always manages to find good luck without making any effort on his part. He's the very epitome of the entitled rich kid who spends the whole time whining about how awful his life is, when all he does is make the lives of everyone around him even worse. I almost rage quit reading the book in the second half because I hated him so much.

Needless to say, I won't be reading the rest of the series, unless of course he isn't in them, something I rather doubt.

LOVED this book! Outstanding job of turning genre tropes on their head. I don't have the time to write the review this book deserves, just know that it's really a six-star!

Harry Potter meets Narnia with drinking, cursing, and ennui? Yes please!

So I am behind the trend on this one. What did I wait for? I loved this world and the characters. Hopefully the rest of the series will hold true. This was a perfect escape read for an adult like me who spent her childhood looking in every nook and cranny searching for Narnia.

Why was this deemed worthy of being turned into a show? The first part while they were at school was fine but from there it just went down hill. I was hoping for something to redeem it but nothing appeared. I think this book was written by a frat boy from NYC.

Quinton was a jerk and loser who had no backbone. He was the one who cheated first after neglecting Alice for an extended period of time. He was already checked out.. and then he's all hung up that she slept with someone? Then there's the excessive drinking and drugs. Sure college students and graduates like to drink but they aren't usually that bad unless they're horrible frat boys. The only good part of the drinking was the Finger Lakes Reisling.
Also, you can't see the Adirondacks from near Buffalo! It's the opposite end of the state about a 5 hour drive away. Buffalo is in WESTERN NY not "upstate". Getting simple geography wrong really decreased my small amount of respect for the author.

Book III put me off; I skimmed a lot through several chapters. It still earned 4 stars for overall imagination and good writing, although I’m undecided about continuing the trilogy.
