Thoughts:
Part memoir, part fiction and graphic novel. I am curious about this literature exploration of the black hair journey. Chris Rock’s documentary, “Good Hair” set the standard and platform for such discussions. I am happy to see this continue!

I really like the concept of graphic short stories, but like many short story collections, I found the collection uneven. Some I absolutely loved. I did like the artwork a lot. This is well worth the read.
I LOVED this graphic novel!
I expected it to be good but not this good. I'm sure I have a different reading style than others which will obviously impact the rating. But I really did enjoy it.
I hate to say this but I don't think alot of people will get the experiences that were mentioned in this novel. I will be THAT one to say it because if you've never experienced something, you won't know how it emotionally affected someone within that experience. There were a few situations that were in these stories that I have experienced as a black woman growing up. I also remember how badly I wanted a perm and how I cried to mother every year because I was emotionally tired of getting hot comb presses. Hot comb presses that sometimes lead me coming home from "The Shop" disappointed because my stylist accidentally burned my ear (or scalp) from the hot comb. I vividly remember my transition from getting presses to getting perms -- being excited about getting a perm but then realizing that this was another form of beauty that would also require a little pain. But all of the girls at school had perms and I wanted straight hair! :) I laughed my butt off at some of these stories and Ms. Flowers did a wonderful job with her graphic art. The images were very helpful with understanding the true feelings of the characters. The very first story was one of my favorites of this novel. I loved that.
I am not saying that not everyone will get something from reading this. I am also not saying that not everyone should read it. I am just saying that alot of readers will not genuinely get this novel.

i loved the way the art style and stories all staged around hair to tell stories big and small, sweet and bitter. in graphic novels, particularly short stories, a skilled storyteller must do many things at once, evoking a mood while telling a story. this was lovely.
I don't particularly love this art style, but I did really enjoy these short stories and parody ads for black hair products. It was a really interesting, informative look at the way life happens around these women getting their hair done.
Really beautiful and intimate set of stories about the complex emotions around black women and their hair. As a white woman, I am absolutely certain that a lot of this went over my head and I'm sure it resonated more deeply with folks who have lived similar experiences. But even for an outsider to the cultural and familial weight of black hair care and maintenance, it was a really interesting combination of stories. There were little vignettes about family and awkward anecdotes about puberty and self-identity. I loved the illustration style as well. The first page kinda stunned me a bit because the lines were some intense and dark and dense, but I got used to it really quickly and the business of the visuals were still easy to parse and REALLY got the motions across. Great read and a really exciting look at the different styles of storytelling that illustration and comics can lend themselves to.
