First off, I'm a small-town-raised white woman who knows almost nothing about black hair--or that was true until I read this graphic novel. Now I know more, though the lived experience is naturally beyond me. I did find some things in common with my own childhood and adulthood--a girl overhearing adult women's "secret" conversations, tension and love between relatives, and a few other bits that are universal. I enjoyed reading and viewing Flowers' depictions of the world of African American girls and women, not just setting, fixing, changing and enjoying their hair (wigs included!) but playing, socializing, and generally living. Flowers' art style is not stylized but has loose lines and a feel that personalities and characters' personalities and surroundings well. Stories are divided by ads for various black hair products that add to the atmosphere.
For adults and for teens whose parents aren't going to mind them reading something with a couple of bare breasts and swear words in them.

I liked it overall but some of the stories ended abruptly and I found myself wanting to know what happened to the characters.
Balancing out the harsh reviews of NB people. I’d give it a 4 or 3.5. I like the artwork and the stories, I just wanted more. The vignettes were too short for me. I wanted to see what happened and to know the characters more. Maybe an intro would have helped the author set the stage and help lead me where we were going.
I’m a little underwhelmed with this collection overall. There are a few stellar comics but they’re buried in with tangents and the panels themselves are hard to read.
The overarching theme of this graphic novel focuses on Black hair-how it is used to express oneself, how others within and outside the Black community view Black hair, and experiences within the Black hair salon. Between the stories are hair ads that mimic the ridiculous promises current hair ads have.
As my first graphic novel I have read as an adult, I felt this book was underwhelming. While I like the idea of highlighting stories centered around Black hair, I felt the execution of it to be below par due to the lack of transitions within the stories and details.

I really loved this collection, the artwork is rough and gives it a zine-esque vibe. A great voice in comics and I can't wait to read more of her stuff.
