Excellent story telling. Great dialog and narration. Wonderful characters. Good use of humor in an action filled, at times violent adventure
Mattie Ross is perfectly drawn.

i didn't love it, but i didn't hate it. was interesting enough to keep going. not one of the greats for me. though there were great little nuggets throughout.

True Grit has all you could want out of a Western novel. The plot revolves around Mattie Ross, a young girl who is searching for revenge for her father's unlawful murder. She teams up with a federal Marshall and a Texas Ranger, and the three set out to avenge Mattie's father and to collect the bounty for the capture of Chaney.
The protagonist Mattie is very well written, her voice comes out strong and believable throughout the book, as if you have picked up her private journal. As well, Cogburn comes across as the quintessential bad-ass-with-a-heart-of-gold, but his characters develops and becomes more complex as the novel continues.

What a read! The movies do not do it justice. There is no narrator quite like Mattie Ross. She is completely uncompromising and pitiless in her love of God, justice, and good business sense. Nearly all the comedy and beauty comes from of her singular zeal and its shockwaves across the brutal, chaotic world of the Reconstruction South. She simply cannot tell a lie, even under threat of her life. She puts up more of a fuss about the sale of horses than about her arm's amputation. She demands politesse and it annoys all of Arkansas and most of Oklahoma.

The book is obvious in its plot and structure, and gives away the ending in the first sentence, as really masterful works are capable of doing (e.g. Brothers Karamazov). There is no need to complicate these things; the voice and characters are more than powerful enough to give vibrancy to the revenge-saga. Portis humanizes nearly every character, usually by contrast with Mattie's invariably low assessments of the thugs she must associate with.

A masterpiece!

I love, love, loved this book! How did I miss this one all these years? So happy to have read this! The voice of 14 year old Maddie, on her quest to avenge the death of her father, is like no other. I loved her character and her riding partners Rooster and LaBeouf.  And the plot is terrific and exciting.
adventurous emotional relaxing fast-paced

I enjoyed both movie versions of this, and finally got around to reading the book. It’s worth a read no matter how many times you’ve seen the movies.
