I love this book chiefly because I love the way in which Thoreau writes of the natural world. Incredibly resplendent detail of every aspect of Walden pond, wherein (if you can excuse some heavy-handed lecturing), some wonderful life lessons are to be found.

I have had this book on my list to read for many years. I have always enjoyed Thoreau’s writing and philosophy. But honestly this book gave me a much different view of the man as arrogant and judgmental. I think if the book would not have included the first two chapters I would have liked it more. His other writings are better in my opinion.

A lovely story, a historical read, increased my appreciation for simplicity and nature.

It reads more like an essay than a story, of a man's collective thoughts about living in nature and his outsider approach to stepping away from society, along with the intrinsic demands of communicating with others and the actions he take as a farmer. There are some very beautiful and thought provoking lines in there, and the prose is very well written.

That is to say, though, this might be the most boring book I have ever read. I did not care to hear about this man growing beans for 30 pages, no matter how metaphorically alluring.
