FINALLY finished this beast but idk what to rate it yet. rtc!

edit: okay, so after some time reflecting on my thoughts on this book, i think i've settled on 3 stars, maybe a 3.5, but i don't think i liked it enough for 4 stars. i think this is a pretty decent sci-fi, and if you're a big fan of science fiction, you'll probably love this! me on the other hand, i'm still not sure if i even enjoy reading sci-fi, lol. i've yet to be wowed by one, and often times i find the material too dense and the writing not engaging enough, which i think was sort of the case with this one.

i read the eragon series when i was younger, and i can definitely see how Paolini's writing has evolved since then, but it still found it dry. maybe this is because i'm a fan of flowery writing and fantasy novels, but this was so dense and the 800-page length didn't help. thank god i had an audiobook credit, because i don't think i would have been able to finish this otherwise (and i would recommend the audiobook for someone intimidated by this book! i listened along with reading my physical copy).

to me, there just wasn't a lot of substance to this book. kira was a frustrating main character because she read like a robot a lot of the time, but then she would have moments of extreme emotion which seemed to literally come out of nowhere. i got no sense of her personality at all. the side characters all had unique personalities, which was nice but i didn't end up feeling strongly about any of them (i enjoyed Trig and Sparrow the most though).

i found the plot to be extremely repetitive. i also found the world building outside of Kira & the alien artifact to be almost nonexistent. i thought the development surrounding the alien artifact and what it was capable of was really interesting, and was probably my favorite aspect of the novel, but the action scenes were incredibly repetitive, and by the ending i just didn't care.

idk, again i think sci-fi lovers will really like this, but for me it was just too long with not enough to keep my interest the entire time.

I enjoyed the general plot but there were too many battle scenes and it felt like a pastiche of the author's favorite F&SF media. This audiobook got me through a migraine cycle and a cold, otherwise I may have DNF

Holy shit I can't believe I finished this.

It's definitely way too long. I can't count how many times I had to read about the main character going to sleep. She was also quite frustrating and honestly a detriment to the narrative. She made several thoughtless mistakes PLUS rather than allowing us to get to know the supporting cast, she would corner and interrogate them about their past. There were two characters in the supporting cast that were explicitly not of American culture, though only one constantly threw around Korean words that really weren't necessary. By this behavior, one other may be Hispanic because she uses the word chica sometimes.

Overall I'm disappointed with this book, especially the characters. It makes me worried about rereading Eragon after 15 years or so.

Paolini's Inheritance Cycle was one of my favourite book series as a teenager. He does not disappoint with his venture into Sci-Fi. To Sleep is very comprehensive in its lore and you can tell the huge amount of research that Paolini undertook to make the science elements as plausible as possible. Paolini's writing style is as easy to read as ever. My only mild criticism is that this is a large book and can feel like it drags on a bit at times: I did run out of steam for a bit reading this.

Ein atemberaubender Weltraum Epos! Mein erster Roman dieses Genres.
