It's good. The author is taking things they clearly loved from well-worn science fiction and horror tropes and telling a neat story. Some sparkling moments, and a laudable bravery in letting the story pick up and discard things at a rapid pace. But there wasn't enough in here for me. I couldn't connect with or care about the characters or the plot. DNF, maybe 33%. Recommended for forgiving science fiction fans.

The story is new (to me) and the characters somewhat fascinating though a bit cliched. The book was too long though, and the ending could be better. Look forward to Paolini’s next.

Thank you Tor UK for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

At the beginning of the story we meet our main character called Kira Navárez. She is an xenobiologest who discovers an alien relic and from that point life just goes down hill for our main character.

I loved the characters in this story, however i did find that the story was more about the world and the plot rather than the characters. And for someone who is very character driven in books i was very disappointed in the lack of character development.

I found this story to be perfect for someone who loves a good sci-fi story. There was ALOT of scientific terminology used in this book which ups the reading level in this book.

I found the story to be very fast paced, however still found it to be very long. There was also some parts that needed to be expanded on. I think this could had been resolved by making this one book into a duo-logy or a trilogy to then make the books shorter and still keep the reader interested.

I was truly all set to give this book a 5 star review. This massive journey took me almost 3 months to digest. But i read it while working full time, being pregnant and delivering a premie child and finishing post graduate school. If this tells you anything i was constantly thinking about this book and the characters and even got my brother to read it as well. HOWEVER- what the hell was this ending? I guess the word I’m looking for is ‘pretentious’. Kira was/is a good character and I’m not entirely sure i understand what she became. For a book as well fleshed out as this one, the ending seemed rushed and unsatisfying, and even kind of backtracked on itself.
